Navy dominates Orange to start Fall World Series
Team Navy jumped in front early to dominate Team Orange in game one of Carson-Newman’s Fall World Series at the Silver Diamond Baseball Complex.
JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Team Navy jumped in front early to dominate Team Orange in game one of Carson-Newman's Fall World Series at the Silver Diamond Baseball Complex on Thursday afternoon.
Team Navy recorded a pair of RBI base hits in the bottom of the first inning to get things started. Johno Pierce singled in a run with a hit to center field and Logan Floyd's sac fly made it 2-0 after the opening inning.
Navy would add to its lead with four runs in the second inning. Trace Alexander drove in a run with a two-strike single to start the inning. Two batters later, Braxton Smith ripped a double into left center field to increase the advantage to 5-0. A Pierce sacrifice fly capped a four-run frame and it was 6-0 Navy after two frames.
Kolton Casson started for Navy and was fantastic. He retired the first five Orange hitters and allowed just two base runners in 3 and 2/3 innings of work. Casson struck out five batters as well.
Team Orange relief pitcher Gavin Griner settled down the Navy offense, tossing a pair of scoreless third and fourth innings. He pitched 3 and 2/3 innings, allowing two runs on three hits with three strikeouts.
But, Navy would back on to its lead in the fifth inning. With a hit and run on, Floyd drove in Pierce with a double into the right center field gap. Kylan Hornbuckle closed the frame with a two-out single to score Floyd and it was 8-0 Navy after five innings.
In relief of Casson, Bransen Angel pitched well tossing three scoreless innings with a pair of punchouts.
Team Navy scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh, to put the run-rule into effect. A pair of singles and a hit batter loaded the bases with one out. Navy would score its two runs in the frame on back-to-back hit by pitches to win 10-0.
For Navy, Angel earned the win by recording nine outs with two strikeouts. He retired seven hitters in a row at one point.
Floyd and Pierce led Navy's offense, both contributing two hits and two RBI. Smith drove in two runs. Nine different Navy hitters recorded a hit and the team finished with 11.
Team Orange was held to just two hits. Tanner Kilgore and Jacob Rogers both had singles in the third and fifth innings. Team Orange had multiple runners on base in just one inning.
