Owens named Elite 23 Winner
ROCK HILL, S.C.- Carson-Newman track and field athlete Abby Owens was named the 2023 South Atlantic Conference Women’s Indoor Track and Field Wealth Enhancement Group Elite 23 Award winner at the conclusion of SAC Championships on Sunday, Feb. 26.
ROCK HILL, S.C.- Carson-Newman track and field athlete Abby Owens was named the 2023 South Atlantic Conference Women's Indoor Track and Field Wealth Enhancement Group Elite 23 Award winner at the conclusion of SAC Championships on Sunday, Feb. 26.
"I'm extremely proud of Abby Owens for her academic and athletic achievement throughout our indoor season. At the SAC Championships, she won her event, hit a provisional qualifying mark for nationals, and then turned around to win the Elite 23 award," head track and field coach David Needs said.
Abby Owens is a senior for the Eagles from Ocala, Fla. Owens holds a 4.0 GPA and plans to graduate with a major in Math & Philosophy.
Owens was named the 2023 SAC Women's Track and Field Wealth Enhancement Group Elite 23 Winner at the conclusion of the championship meet. The award honors the student-athlete who has the top cumulative grade-point average in each of the league's 23 team championship events.
Owens placed first in the women's pole vault in day one of the SAC Championships with a 3.68-meter mark.
"Abby was exceptional in every way she could be, and if that doesn't represent the best of who we are, then I don't know what does," Needs said.
Carson-Newman women's track and field concluded the regular indoor season ranked fourth in the conference. The Eagles will be back in action for the NCAA DII Indoor Track and Field Championships beginning Friday, Mar. 10.
