LEXINGTON, Va.- Carson-Newman track and field head back to the Corps Physical Training Facility for the VMI Winter Classic.
The Carson-Newman track and field team is heading to Lexington, Va. for the VMI Winter Classic this Friday, Jan. 27 for a two-day meet. The Eagles are coming off last week's performance at the Finn Pincus Invitational where several athletes acquired top finishes. Raymond Brugmans finished first in the men's one mile race with a time of 4:26.67, and Abby Owens won gold in the pole vault at 3.55 meters.
"We had so many athletes who competed for their personal bests. It's always a great when you see athletes do better than they ever have. For those who didn't do as well, we are now focusing on what we can do next time to make it better," head coach for the track and field team David Needs said.
Carson-Newman track and field were in Lexington, Va. only two weeks ago for the VMI Invitational where the team secured multiple spots on the podium and an array of personal best performances.
Makanakaishe Charamba finished first and secured a personal best in the men's 60-meter run with a time of 6.78 seconds. Charamba continued to find the podium as he placed first in the men's 200-meter run in 21.38. Sade De Sousa placed second in the women's 200-meter race with a time of 25.05. De Sousa also grabbed gold in the women's 60-meter race with a new personal record of 7.41 seconds in the event.
Other successes included Sydney McCarty's (5.61 meters) and Susan Nelson's (5.10 meters) season best performances in the women's long jump. On the men's side, Camden Fritz had a season best clearance of 6.74 meters in the event. Matthew Blackmon beat his best time in the 60-meter hurdles in 8.10 seconds for a second-place finish.
"VMI does a great job of hosting frequent meets. This meet is actually the perfect storm for us because we have a lot of SAC schools that are going to be there. It's going to be a big meet and a good chance for us to figure out where we are from a national ranking standpoint," Needs said.
The Eagles are headed to compete at the VMI Winter Classic this Friday, Jan. 27 at 1:00 p.m. and Saturday, Jan. 28 at 10:00 a.m. Stay up to date on cneagles.com.
