ROCK HILL, S.C.- Makanakaishe Charamba has been named the SAC Varsity Gems Men's Indoor Track Athlete of the Week for his two first-place finishes at the VMI Invitational this past weekend.
Charamba is a sophomore sprinter for the Eagles from Harare, Zimbabwe. He left the VMI Invitational with two NCAA provisional marks and two first-place finishes.
"Makanakaishe showed us a lot by running three 60-meter races and then a 200-meter race. We have been challenging him to not just be fast but to also have great durability. He came through big time," Carson-Newman head track and field coach David Needs said.
Charamba finished first in the 60-meter prelims (6.85) and semis (6.84) beating his own season best twice in one night on Friday evening, Jan. 13. Charamba continued to find success as he finished first and secured a personal best in the men's 60- meter run finals with a time of 6.78 seconds on Saturday, Jan. 14. After his sprint for gold, Charamba found the podium yet again as he placed first in the men's 200-meter run in 21.38.
Among Charamba were two other Eagles who garnered SAC Varsity Gems Athlete of the Week awards. Kadidja Sangare and Sade De Sousa swept the women's side of track and field recognition this week.
"We preached all week that great athletes bring big performances against great competition. All three of these athletes certainly did that," Needs said.
The Eagles race again this weekend at the Finn Pincus Invitational beginning on Jan. 20. Make sure to stay up to date on cneagles.com.
