LEXINGTON, Va.- Eagles head to Virginia Military Institute to kick off the 2023 indoor track and field season.
Carson-Newman will compete in the two-day VMI Invitational this weekend. The meet will take place in the Corps Physical Training Facility in Lexington, Va. The first event is set to begin at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 13. The second of the two days will begin Jan. 14 at 10:00 a.m. Head coach David Needs recently released the upcoming indoor schedule for the track and field team, which has the Eagles traveling to Lexington, Va. twice throughout next few months.
"What we try and look for is the best opportunities for the entire team to get ready for the conference meet, but then also to get the best opportunities for our elite athletes to get the chance to go to nationals," Carson-Newman head track and field coach David Needs said.
The first of those opportunities presents itself this weekend when the Eagles face off against both Division I and Division II schools.
"We're not going to go to a meet where we are just trying to be average. We want to be the very best. We want to go to VMI against Division I and Division II schools and perform at our very best. Hopefully, that locks in places for nationals or locks in opportunities to qualify for other meets," Needs said.
In 2021, Carson-Newman track and field attended the VMI Winter Classic where Nathalie Schumacher finished third in the women's high jump with a clearance of 1.65 meters. The Eagles also competed in the VMI Indoor Classic on Feb. 14, 2020, where sprinter Devon Moore stood on the podium in both the men's 60 and 200-meter dash finals.
The Eagles were voted fourth in the SAC preseason polls this season. The women's track and field team placed fourth in the SAC preseason poll with a score of 96, while the men took fourth with 105 points in the voting.
"Conference is important, and it's important to everyone at Carson-Newman where we finish. We hope that because we are performing at our very best, the byproduct is winning a conference championship. However, we hope that the final product is competing for a national championship," Needs said.
Carson-Newman track and field will compete tomorrow beginning at 1:00 p.m. at the VMI Invitational in Lexington, Va.
