SALEM, Va.- Eagles start off the 2022-23 indoor track and field season at the Bast-Cregger Invitational.
Carson-Newman track and field begins the 2022-23 season in a two-day unscored team invitational hosted by Roanoke College. The Eagles will compete Friday beginning at 1:00 p.m. and continue Saturday morning at 11:00 a.m.
Aside from Carson-Newman, Concord, Eastern Mennonite, Emory & Henry, Lincoln (Pa.), Lenior-Rhyne, Mars Hill, Mary Baldwin, Southern Virginia, Mount Olive, and Virginia Union University will be in attendance, as well as Columbia College (S.C.) Randolph College, and Livingston College.
"For the freshman, it's a chance to gain experience, and for the upperclassmen, it's a chance to break training and get a meet in before the end of the fall," Carson-Newman head track and field coach David Needs said.
During the first meet of the Eagles' 2021-22 indoor track and field season at the KMS Invitational in Birmingham, Ala., the team left with two event wins and 17 new personal records. Carson-Newman ended the season with fifth place finishes for both the men's and women's teams in the 2021 SAC Indoor Championships.
The Eagles men's and women's indoor track and field teams recently garnered fourth place picks in the 2022-23 SAC preseason polls.
"We know that often initial polls reflect last season. Now, we want to forge a new path of success. We need to keep this meet in perspective and realize that this is just one step of many in the upcoming season. I think it will be a great opportunity for us," Needs said.
The Bast-Cregger Invitational will begin with a pentathlon at 1:00 p.m. Field events are set to begin at 3:30 p.m. with the women's high jump. Running events will start at 5:00 p.m. with the women's 60M hurdles prelims.
