The 2023 South Atlantic Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships are set to begin this Saturday, Feb. 25 at 10:00 a.m. in Winston-Salem, N.C. The battle for a conference title will unfold over two days.
"During the year, our focus is run as fast as you can, jump as far as you can, and throw as far as you can because we want to improve our place for nationals. But, when you go to the conference meet, it's now about beating everybody else. Place becomes the thing that now matters. For our athletes, that mindset has shifted from competing against yourself to competing against the conference, and more importantly, competing for the team," head track and field coach David Needs said.
The pentathlon and heptathlon events will kick off the meet followed by track and field events at 1:00 p.m. Check out the full schedule and live results HERE.
"We put a lot of preparation into this meet, and we've done everything we can do to avoid any distractions this weekend. Our assistants do a good job of coaching during the meet as well. It's the little corrections we can make throughout the meet. Speaking as the head coach, I'm very blessed to have a great staff of people who are focused on that and making sure we are where we need to be to get the maximum performance," Needs said.
Both Carson-Newman men's and women's track and field will enter the competition ranked nationally. The men currently sit at No. 31, and the women are ranked No. 38 in the country.
"One of the things we want to focus on is being a great ambassador for Christ in the way we perform this weekend. We want to glorify Him, not only through our performance, but through the way we react to teammates, competitors, and coaches. When we can go and represent Carson-Newman, and more importantly, the God who created us, in a positive way, performance and all those other things are going to fall into place," Needs said.
The Eagles will compete for a conference title this weekend beginning Saturday, Feb. 25 at the SAC Indoor Track and Field Championships in Winston-Salem, N.C. Stay up to date on cneagles.com.
