Picot sits in the top three while C-N Women’s golf slotted twelfth in tough field
The Eagles improved by two strokes in round two with exceptional play from Picot and Lambert, sitting a stroke behind Erskine and nine strokes out of the top 10.
DAHLONEGA, Ga. – The Eagles improved by two strokes in round two with exceptional play from Picot and Lambert, sitting a stroke behind Erskine and nine strokes out of the top 10.
"There is a lot of room for improvement. There's a couple holes I think that I will be on and watch a little bit closer," said head coach Alyssa Montgomery. "This course is kind of tight. If you get it offline, it's hard to be able to fire away. We need to keep it in the fairway, and I think off the tee will really help knock a few strokes off."
Anaelle Picot had a phenomenal day on the golf course. The graduate student was on it from the jump, birdying her second and third holes of the day. She followed that with three more birdies on the front nine to go out with a 35, and wrapped up her first 18 with a birdie on the par four 10th to come in at 34. The 69 (-3) in round was a career low for Picot.
In round two, Picot made just one bogey to pair with three birdies to shoot 70 (-2) in her second round. At -5, the French native sits tied for third place in the individual standings and is four back of the lead.
"Anaelle did great. Super proud of her and how she led the team the whole day in both her morning and afternoon rounds. This is a tough course and she did great," said Montgomery.
Emery Fisher was the next best for the Eagles. Fisher made five birdies throughout the first round, including one on her opening hole on the par-four 12th. However, two double bogeys in her first five holes would set her back a few strokes. Regardless, Fisher rallied for a 73 (+1) in round one.
The junior followed that with a 76 (+4) in the second round. Fisher recorded her lone birdie of round two at the par-four 8th to count her for a +5 36-hole score. Fisher currently sits 39th in the field.
Grace Lambert ended her day strong in the second round of the event. Lambert cleaned up from the 78 (+6) she put on the board in round one and carded three birdies in her second 18. The highlight of her round was draining a six-foot eagle putt on the par-five 6th to give her a 34 on the front nine. She finished the second round even par and is 45th in the field with a +6 overall score.
"Super proud of Grace. She had a little bit of a rougher morning, so I was glad to see her come back and have a great afternoon," Montgomery said.
Madison Miller and Rylee Tucker rounded out the Eagles' opening rounds. Miller posted an 80 (+8) in the first round with a birdie on the par-four twelfth and followed that with an 82 (+10) in the final round, writing a par on her card ten times throughout the second 18 holes. Miller is +18 overall and lands 83rd in the field.
Tucker found some help late in round one with birdies on the par-five 6th and the par-four 9th. With an 86 (+14) in round one, Tucker improved by six strokes and carded two more birdies in her first five holes of round one to come in at 80 (+8) in round two. Tucker is +22 overall and 87th in the field.
The team improved by two strokes in the second round, but sits at +22 through 36 holes and lands 12th on the leaderboard. While C-N sits a stroke behind Erskine, they need to make up nine strokes to catch up to Missouri-St. Louis and Florida Southern, who are tied for 9th.
"The message for them is to play their game and not focus too much on what everyone else is doing. Mitigate losses where they can. Sometimes a bogey is a great score and you just have to make your bogey and move on and be happy with it. Keeping their head up and hanging in there will be the biggest part," said Montgomery.
Anderson currently leads the field with an astounding -14 team score. The Trojans' Aly Francis leads the field at -9 after a bogey-free 65 in the first round.
Carson-Newman will tee up its final 18 holes of the fall season tomorrow at 9:00 AM, beginning on holes 9-12 at Achasta. Live scoring is available on the Clippd website.
