JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Head men's golf coach Randy Wylie has revealed the team's fall slate, including two tournaments from a season ago and two new challenges for the Eagles in 2024.
"It's nice to have a couple of tournaments we've played a whole bunch in and had some really good success," Wylie said. "It's exciting to play new places too… The kids get excited about it. We have a couple of really nice courses that we'll go play… It will be a really good championship schedule against many highly ranked teams."
C-N starts the fall season on September 8th, competing in the Bearcat Fall Invitational in McCormick, South Carolina, at the Monticello Golf Club. This will mark one of the two new challenges for the Eagles against a competitive field featuring many top-tier teams from the southeast region, such as Lander and Anderson.
The Eagles take 12 days off before heading to a familiar event on September 22nd at the UNG Mizuno Intercollegiate in Gainesville, Georgia, at the Chattahoochee Golf Club. C-N appeared at the event last season, notching a 7th-place finish amongst a stacked field.
Two of C-N's returning golfers earned top-50 finishes, with Nick Daugherty tying for 37th and Noah Cambridge tying for 41st.
C-N kicks off October at the Hurricane Invitational on October 6th in Albany, Georgia, at Doublegate Country Club. The Eagles also competed in Albany a season ago, finishing in 7th.
Three current Eagles delivered solid performances in the event last season, with Noah Cambridge and Nick Daugherty tying for 23rd and Elliot MacGregor finishing in 39th.
Wylie's squad closes out the fall at the Currahee Invitational on October 20th in Toccoa, Georgia, at the Currahee Club, providing another new challenge to close the door on the fall campaign.
While the fall slate includes a handful of challenges, C-N returns several experienced golfers, including Elliot MacGregor, Noah Cambridge, and Nick Daugherty, while bringing in four freshmen. Wylie believes his roster's mix of experience and youth serves the team well.
"I love having both older and young guys," Wylie said. "That mix is really fun because it's neat to watch them interact, and the older guys kind of teach the younger guys the Carson-Newman way… They can be mentors to the young guys."
Although the Eagles return a fair amount of talent, Wylie's team will have to look to replace the production of Luke Stock, who earned an individual bid to the southeast regional following the spring season.
While Stock leaves big shoes to fill, Wylie knows his experienced roster can produce.
"We have three seniors who are very experienced and have played a lot of college golf," Wylie said. "I would expect them to be all-conference level players… Noah Cambridge had a great summer. He's playing fantastic, so I'm really bullish on his ability to come in and do some good work this year, too."
The Eagles delivered many impressive rounds last year, but inconsistency plagued the team's ability to finish higher in the competitive fields. Wylie realizes his team needs to deliver low numbers more consistently to ensure higher finishes this year.
"We had a ton of great rounds, but when we didn't play well, we kind of let it get away," Wylie said. "We need to mentally be more consistent. We've got to find ways to stop the bleeding… That's a skill to turn around negativity in the round and adversity, turn it into a positive, and work hard for the team."
The Eagles will look to kick off the season on a high note on September 8th at the Bearcat Invitational in McCormick, South Carolina.
