JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The Eagles men's golf team treks back to the Peach State after a couple of weeks off to compete against another stout field at the Hurricane Invitational in Albany, Georgia, on Monday and Tuesday.
After an improved showing at the UNG Mizuno Intercollegiate, head coach Randy Wylie is encouraged and excited to see what his team can do at the Hurricane Invitational.
"We played better as a team," Wylie said. "Everybody contributed, which is something you really want to see. We avoided some disastrous rounds that we had in the first event… I was very happy to see that, as a team, they came together and did a good job of having each other's backs… We've got to grow in that, take it into this next week, and get even better."
With a lot of reshuffling in the lineup early in the fall season, Wylie is encouraged by his team's competitive nature and overall talent, fighting for a spot in the lineup.
"I see a lot of talent," Wylie said. "We have some freshmen that are clearly going to be really good college players… We also have some older guys who are good leaders and they will help the young guys along."
Despite some inclement weather keeping C-N off the course, Wylie and his team have honed in on some aspects of the game to improve in the next event.
"We've been working on technique stuff," Wylie said. "We were fortunate the weather did not crush us too bad… We were fortunate not to miss too many days, so we could put in time working on cleaning up different areas with different individuals in their game."
The Eagles finished 7th at the Hurricane Invitational last year, but Wylie is aware that the course may play differently this year due to Hurricane Helene's effects.
"The course actually got hit by the eye of the hurricane," Wylie said. "They say it's fine… But we don't know exactly what we're going into… We don't know if it changed anything about how the course plays. From everything I've heard, the course is in good shape, so we're excited to go play at a course we're familiar with."
It's another tough field for C-N, and Wylie knows his team must take the next step to separate itself in a competitive tournament.
"We need to have more rounds in the 60s," Wylie said. "When you're playing most of the top ten in the country again this week, they're shooting rounds in the 60s, and we have to answer that. We did a good job of not having a high round last week, and we had a couple of under-par rounds, but we need to be a little more consistent in our ability to attack, play aggressively, and get some of those low numbers on the board."
Wylie and the Eagles will tee off on the Hurricane Invitational in Albany, Georgia, on Monday at 8 AM.
