SALISBURY, NC -- Carson-Newman scored twice in the second half and defeated 25th-ranked Catawba 2-0 in South Atlantic Conference women's soccer action on Saturday night at Frock Field. The Lady Eagles improve to 11-1 overall and 4-1 in the SAC, while Catawba falls to 9-2-2 and 3-1-1.
Each team had several chances to break through in the first half, but were not able to find the net. Brittany Moore had the first chance on a volley off a cross from Rebecca Angus , but was denied by Catawba keeper Kathleen Blake just before the half hour.
McKenzie Burman had a breakaway chance for Catawba five minutes later, but her strike was wide. Angus was saved on a blast from the top of the box in the 38th minute, while Catawba's Alyssa Schoenberg had a header off a corner kick just over the bar.
Carson-Newman continued to threaten in the second half, but were constantly denied by Blake until the 75th minute when Megan Julian settled down a cross from Christie Murray and put home the first tally. With Catawba pushed up in the closing minute, Angus collected a ball at midfield and dribbled down uncontested for an insurance goal with just 21 seconds left. Blake made 13 saves for Catawba as Carson-Newman held a 22-7 edge in shots.
