C-N rolls by Clayton State
JEFFERSON CITY, TN - The 4th-ranked Carson-Newman Lady Eagles used three goals from All-American Rebecca Angus and two goals from Megan Julian to cruise to 6-1 win over nationally-ranked Clayton State on Sunday afternoon at McCown Field.
The Lady Eagles secretly titled their two Labor Day Weekend matches "revenge weekend," after falling to both Belmont-Abbey and Clayton State in the regular season last year.
Whatever extra motivation the Lady Eagles were seeking with the mindset, they found it early and often Sunday afternoon.
"I'm delighted with the result. We beat a team with plenty of talent," said Lady Eagles Head Coach Phil McNamara. "The girls really wanted these two matches this weekend, but we still have work to do."
Megan Julian's header in the 4th minute gave C-N a quick 1-0 lead, but the Lakers answered.
Antoinette Anouga's run in the 8th minute tied the match at 1-1. Anouga pushed the ball up the left side on her own and was able to slide her right-footed shot past C-N keeper Nyssa Griffin. The Lady Eagles needed just four minutes to answer and take the lead for good.
Rebecca Angus' goal in the 12th minute put C-N up 2-1.
She followed with her second goal seven minutes later as Angus buried a cross from senior Stacey Thomas in the back of the net to make it 3-1 C-N.
The Lady Eagles put the game away in the first minute of the second half.
Sophomore Megan Julian blasted a header from Jessie Stephens by Lakers' keeper Lindsay Schmidt to make it 4-1.
"Megan had some good runs today. She was able to put away two simple balls and we need to do that." said McNamara.
Junior Zarmena Kasparites' redirect of Julie Nelson's free kick in the 66th minute made it 5-1. Angus added C-N's final goal in the 87th minute. The senior put a perfect cross from senior Lindsay Farris for her third goal. It was Angus' third goal on five shots.
"Rebecca is an All-American. We need her to play like that in these games to be successful," said McNamara.
The Lady Eagles out-shot Clayton State 26-7.
C-N moves to 3-0 in 2006. The Lady Eagles travel to Harrogate, Tennessee to face Lincoln Memorial on Wednesday. C-N beat LMU 3-1 in the 2005 NCAA Tournament. The match begins at 3 p.m.
C-N will host USC-Upstate at McCown Field on Saturday afternoon at 4:30 p.m.
