Eagles Fall Short On The Road At Catawba

SALISBURY, N.C. – Carson-Newman swimming teams turned in several strong individual performances Friday afternoon despite falling to Catawba in a dual meet at Johnson Pool.
"Overall the meet went well," said head coach Ben Young. "In all reality, the biggest piece of the puzzle we saw today was how broken down we are. The training that we've been doing shows how much room we have to improve. We need to rest when the resting phase comes in a few weeks. When we have meets like this coming off travel, we seem to struggle to get up, and that was obvious today in how we got here, prepared, and got into the meet."
The women's squad fell in a final score of 190-72, while the men came up short in a final of 175-87.
On the women's side, sophomore Megan Corcoran delivered one of the Eagles' top performances of the day, winning the 200-yard butterfly with a Division II B-cut time of 2:02.99. Corcoran also posted a strong swim in the 200-yard backstroke, finishing second overall at 2:01.83, another B-cut performance. Senior Emma Bowling added a runner-up finish in the 50-yard freestyle, touching the wall in 24.29, and followed with a second-place showing in the 100-yard freestyle at 52.83.
Freshman Ana Faria was a bright spot in the distance events, placing second in the 1,000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:47.04, while also recording a third-place finish in the 200-yard breaststroke at 2:26.41. Junior Martina Ivanova added a pair of solid swims, finishing third in the 200-yard butterfly (2:08.81) and fourth in the 100-yard butterfly (1:00.43).
On the men's side, junior Gabriel Morales led Carson-Newman with multiple podium finishes. Morales placed second in the 200-yard butterfly, posting a Division II B-cut time of 1:48.55, and followed with a strong runner-up finish in the 200-yard backstroke at 1:48.10. Freshman Gabriel Catapano turned in an impressive swim in the 100-yard freestyle, finishing second overall in 44.88, also meeting the Division II B standard.
Distance swimmer Jack Hebert recorded a fourth-place finish in the 1,000-yard freestyle with a time of 9:46.03, while adding a third-place result in the 500-yard freestyle at 4:47.10. Senior Arthur Gluzman highlighted the sprint events with a second-place finish in the 50-yard freestyle (20.90) and a win for the Eagles in the 100-yard butterfly, touching in 49.17.
Carson-Newman also found success in relay action. The women's 200-yard freestyle relay team of Bowling, Ivanova, Olivia Kerr Muir, and Corcoran finished second with a time of 1:37.43, while the men's 200-yard freestyle relay quartet of Morales, Catapano, Cody Hart, and Gluzman placed second at 1:21.48.
