LOUDON, Tenn. – The 17th-ranked Carson-Newman men's golf team leads by two strokes after the first round of the Tennessee River Ramble at Tennessee National Golf Club after the Eagles tallied a 12-over 300 during Monday's round.
Freshman Jake Headrick (Maryville, Tenn.) led the team with an even-par 72 and is a stroke behind the leaders in third-place after the first 18 holes of play.
"We played well today to take the lead in really tough conditions," coach Randy Wylie said. "I felt like we were playing at a PGA Tour event today as the course was at the same caliber. Tennessee National has fast greens and was windy. I'm very pleased with with the even-par round freshman Jake Headrick produced today.
"As a team, we played well, but too many doubles. The course is really difficult, but we can still limit those by playing smarter."
Headrick recorded the Eagles' lone eagle of the first round on the par-five 11th to power his way to an even-par 72.
Junior Dalton Reese (Warrenton, Ga.) shot two-under on the front nine with three birdies but a stretch of five bogies in six holes to finish the first round with a two-over 74. The junior is tied for fifth.
Nicklaus Kennedy (London, Ontario, Canada) worked around a pair of double bogeys in his first eight holes of the day to settle with a four-over 76. The senior carded three birdies on the day with his final one coming on the par-three 17th. Kennedy is tied for eighth.
Senior Jace DeVault (Bluff City, Tenn.) shot five-over on the back nine to finish his round at six-over 78. DeVault tallied birdies on the par-threes third and seventh for his two birdies on Monday to tie for 13th. Fellow senior Andrew Hall (Knoxville, Tenn.) shot three straight bogeys, including a quadruple bogey on the par-four 16th, to shoot a seven-over 79 and is tied for 21st.
Wingate's Philip Coles and Oskar Lundgren from Brevard are both tied for the tournament lead with an one-under 71 on their scorecards. Headrick trails the duo by a stroke, while Wingate's Jarrett Stowe is a stroke behind the C-N freshman. Reese is tied for Lincoln Memorials' Cody Johnson for fifth. The Eagles lead by two strokes over Wingate, while LMU and Brevard are four strokes off the Orange and Blue in a tie for third.
