JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The 17th-ranked Carson-Newman men's golf team wraps up the regular season portion of its schedule with the 63-mile trek to the Tennessee National Golf Club for the Tennessee River Ramble hosted by South Atlantic Conference foe Lincoln Memorial on Monday and Tuesday.
The team for the Eagles at the River Ramble features three seniors, a sophomore and a freshman as Jace DeVault (Bluff City, Tenn.), Andrew Hall (Knoxville, Tenn.), Jake Headrick (Maryville, Tenn.), Nicklaus Kennedy (London, Ontario, Canada) and Dalton Reese (Warrenton, Ga.) make up the five-member squad. Freshman Grant Bodie (Knoxville, Tenn.) will compete as an individual.
Hall led Carson-Newman at the Bobby Nichols Intercollegiate, which was the team's last event two weeks ago, with a two-over 218. The senior now has four top-five finishes during the 2015-16 season and he ranks second in the South Atlantic Conference amongst student-athletes that have competed in over 10 rounds with a scoring average of 71.3
Reese is second on the team with a scoring average of 72.7 strokes, which is eighth-best in the conference. Headrick is tied with Hall for the team lead with 10 rounds that either scored at even-par or below. Bodie is competing in his third tournament of the spring after playing in the Spring Kickoff Intercollegiate and NCAA South/Southeast Regional Preview; the freshman's low score of the year is one-over 71.
Last season, Hall led the Eagles with a tie for second after shooting a two-under 70 during the final round in the Tennessee River Ramble, while the team finished in fifth-place. The event began a span of four straight rounds for Carson-Newman that was scored in the 300s; the only other time the program has had at least four consecutive rounds over 300 over the last three seasons was in the spring of 2014 when C-N had eight rounds scored in the 300-range.
Carson-Newman and host LMU are the only two ranked teams in the field; the Railsplitters are 19th in the Bushnell Golfweek Division II Coaches Poll. Joining the Eagles and 'Splitters in the field are: Catawba, Anderson (S.C.), Wingate, Brevard, Georgia Military College, Lenoir-Rhyne, Mars Hill, Washburn College and Walter State Community College.
The River Ramble will be played one of the best courses in the state of Tennessee. Designed by British Open winner Greg Norman, the course spans 7,393-yards through Loudon County on the banks of the Tennessee River. The course plays a par-72. It was noted as one of the top 10 golf experiences in Tennessee.
The 54-hole Tennessee River Ramble will begin on Monday with 36 holes on the docket and conclude on Tuesday with the final round.
