JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Carson-Newman men's golf coach Randy Wylie signed Aberdeen, Scotland-native Fintan McKenna as his lone signee during the fall signing period.
McKenna, the son of Aidan and Maria McKenna, comes to Carson-Newman by way of Albyn School in Aberdeen.
"Fintan is a top level player with solid swing mechanics and excellent length. With his combination of academic achievement and athletic excellence, he's just the type of student athlete that we strive to recruit to Carson-Newman University," Wylie said.
McKenna holds the course record at Royal Burgess Golf Club, which is the oldest golf club in the world, with a round of nine-under 62. He held a stroke average of 75.2 in 2015 national events and recorded his best finish of the year at the Paul Lawrie Junior Jug with a seventh-place showing. Throughout his junior career, he was coached by Andrew Locke.
He is the vice-president of the Royal Aberdeen junior team and was a member of the Aberdeen Pennant League winners in 2013 and 2015. Academically at Albyn School, McKenna was a prefect, the vice-president of the Literacy and Debating Society and he received full academic colours in his senior year.
McKenna will study Finance and Economics at Carson-Newman. He is the first member of his family to play collegiate athletics.
