HOWIE-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla. – Freshman Jake Headrick (Maryville, Tenn.) shot Carson-Newman's low below-par score of the first two rounds of the NCAA South/Southeast Regional Preview at Mission Inn Resort & Golf Club in Howie-in-the-Hills, Fla. as the Eagles are in seventh-place after the first day of competition.
Headrick shot a second round 71 to pace 21st-ranked Carson-Newman in a field filled with ranked opponents and is tied for 18th after the first two rounds.
"I thought we had a mediocre performance today," coach Randy Wylie said. "The field was great and the conditions were tough, but we fell back into some old habits, where we made doubles and higher. To compete at the elite level we're striving for, we have to eliminate those big numbers. In the afternoon, Jake Headrick played a great round; though as a coach, I was discouraged that we had to count a round in the 80s. We are still a position to have a solid finish. We're striving for better tomorrow."
On the back nine, Headrick birdied the par-five first and the par-four fifth to rebound from a back-nine bogey for his third below-par round of the spring.
Senior Andrew Hall (Knoxville, Tenn.) shot a one-over 73 in the first round to the lead the team but responded with a five-over 78 in the second round and is tied for 21st . The senior birdied the par-three 15th for his lone birdie of the first round. Hall is sitting at seven-over 151 heading into Tuesday's final round.
Senior Jace Devault (Bluff City, Tenn.) shot rounds of 78 and 76 in the first and second round, respectively, to tie for 43rd. Devault led the team with six birdies on the day, which tied for 13th among the field, and had four during the second round. He finished the day at 11-over 155.
Fresh off a third-place performance two weeks ago at the Spring Kickoff Intercollegiate, junior Dalton Reese (Warrenton, Ga.) had the team's second-lowest score in the first round with a 75 but shot an 82 during the second round for a two-round total of 13-over 157.
Freshman Grant Bodie (Knoxville, Tenn.) is tied for 64th after shooting a 79 and 81 in his two rounds of play.
Lynn's Manuel Torres leads the field by three strokes over Lee Gearhart from Chico State. Torres is at six-under. Lynn leads the team competition by 16 strokes over Florida Southern; Chico State, host Saint Leo's and Nova Southeastern round out the top-five.
The final 18 holes of the South/Southeast Regional Preview tees off at 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday with a shotgun start.
