Wylie announces fall portion of 2015 schedule
JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Carson-Newman men's golf coach Randy Wylie has set his team's schedule for the fall portion of the 2015-16 season that features return trips to three tournaments from the 2014 season.
The Eagles will participate in five tournaments during the fall and will compete in four states throughout the Southeast.
"We've got a serious schedule, so I expect to be pretty good. I scheduled for us to pretty good so, we are playing three of the top five tournaments in the nation this fall, so we have our hands full," Wylie said.
Carson-Newman opens the season at the Kiawah Island Invitational hosted by USC-Aiken at Osprey Point Golf Club on September 14th and 15th. Last season, the Eagles played in the same event on Kiawah Island's Cougar Point Golf Course and finished 16th after the second round of play was cancelled due to rain. The 6,545-yard, par-72 Osprey Point Golf Club opened in 2010. C-N has competed in the Kiawah Island Invitational each of the past five seasons with the best finish coming with a fifth-place showing in 2011.
After a week off, the Eagles will travel to the Lake Jovita Country Club in Tampa. Fla. for the Saint Leo Men's Invitational on September 28th and 29th. Carson-Newman will be competing in the tournament for the first time. Lake Jovita plays as a par-72, 7,153-yard course from the tips and was designed by PGA golfer Tom Lehman.
"We just want to have a really tough, competitive team and be able to compete on a national level and to do that, we feel like we have to go and seek out and play the best competition and that's what we are doing," Wylie said. "We are going to jump right in there and we have three top returning players and we have some players returning on the team that haven't proven themselves and we expect them to improve. We have three incoming freshmen that had terrific summers and some more incoming freshmen that are really talented also."
The last three tournaments of the fall are return trips for Wylie's team and that trend is started with the University of North Georgia Fall Invitational at Achasta Golf Club in Dahlonega, Ga. on October 5th and 6th. Senior Nicklaus Kennedy (London, Ontario, Canada) won the individual medal at the event last season after a four-hole playoff, while the team placed fourth.
C-N makes the short trek to Tazewell, Tenn. for the next tournament as South Atlantic Conference foe Lincoln Memorial host the State Farm Intercollegiate at Woodlake Golf Club on October 12th and 13th. In 2014, the Eagles placed second at the tournament and senior Andrew Hall (Knoxville, Tenn.) tied for the third and Kennedy placed fifth in the individual competition.
"We are really trying to get the mindset and our goal, in addition to a SAC championships, is to go the NCAAs. And to go the NCAAs and play well there, you have to play the best teams, at least some, so you are not mentally intimidated and you realize you are good as they are so we can beat them in the NCAA Regional," Wylie said of his team's scheduling. "It's two-fold when you play a really tough early season schedule; one is to develop the confidence in your team to win the conference championship and two, once you do that, you don't want to just make an appearance at the NCAA Tournament, you want to compete and be really good at the NCAA Tournament and that is ultimately what we are trying to accomplish."
"We are going to go from not being the deepest team to I think being a very deep team. I just think we are going to much better one through seven or eight and I think that should carry us when we play these tougher teams in those tough tournaments," Wylie said of his 2015 squad.
