Needs Named Finalist for D-II Assistant of the Year Award
Dec. 11, 2008
JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. - Carson-Newman quarterbacks coach David Needs has been named as a finalist for the American Football Coaches Association Division II Coach of the Year Award.
Needs, who recently completed his 13th season at Mossy Creek, has coached the Eagle quarterbacks the last three years.
During his stint with the C-N signal callers, Needs has coached senior-to-be Alex Good (Greensboro, N.C.) to a pair of All-South Atlantic Conference nods. Each of the last two seasons, Eagle quarterbacks have finished in the top six nationally in passing efficiency, including leading the nation in 2007. In each season, C-N has also finished in the top 10 nationally in rushing, scoring, and total offense.
Needs has recently had articles published in national football magazines including; "Using The Passing Game To Make Your Option Offense Explosive" published in Gridiron Strategy and "Teaching Wide Receivers the Critical Skills" published in American Football Monthly.
Joining Needs as finalists were Matt Entz of Winona State and Matt Yoches from Grand Valley State. Entz would be announced as winner of the award.
Current Eagles offensive coordinator Mike Turner won the award in 2003.
The criteria for the award is not limited to on-field coaching ability or the success of the team and players that these assistant coaches work with. Service to the community through charitable work and other volunteer activities, participation in AFCA activities and events, participation in other professional organizations and impact on student-athletes are all taken into account in the selection process.
