Eagles ranked No. 4 in latest AFCA poll

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. - The Carson-Newman football team moved up to No. 4 in the latest American Football Coaches Association Division II Coaches' Poll, released Tuesday morning.
The Eagles (1-0) received 556 total votes and one first place vote after being ranked sixth in the preseason poll. Carson-Newman defeated Concord University 77-14 Thursday night to open the 2008 season.
North Alabama (1-), who will visit Burke-Tarr Stadium for a showdown with the Eagles Thursday night, is No. 3 in the latest poll. The Lions garnered 560 total votes and one first place vote.
Valdosta St. (2-0) held on to the top spot for the second consecutive week after edging by No. 20 Newberry 14-9 Saturday. The Blazers collected 22 of the 26 available first place votes. Grand Valley St., who has yet to play a game this season, remains second.
Only one other South Atlantic Conference team was ranked this week. Newberry fell just one spot to No. 21 after losing to the top-ranked Blazers. Catawba, who was No. 19 in the preseason poll, fell out of this week's top 25 following a 14-7 defeat to St. Augustine's.
