Wingate Defeats Eagles, 10-5

JEFFERSON CITY, TN-- Spencer Robinson hit a two-run homer and Nick Siega-Riz homered as part of a five-run ninth inning as Wingate defeated Carson-Newman, 10-5 to win the final game of a three-game South Atlantic Conference series.
C-N (24-15, 12-5 SAC) trailed 3-0 after three innings, but rallied for three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Langdon Potts singled to lead off the inning and advanced to second on a wild pitch. After Nick Achberger drew a walk, Michael Brown hit an infield single to load the bases with no outs. Adam Kefauver laced a single to centerfield to score Potts and Achberger as the Eagles moved to within a run of Wingate's lead at 3-2. Two batters later, Tyler Wynn's RBI groundout scored Brown to even the score at 3-3.
The Bulldogs reclaimed the lead in the fifth. Josh Benton drew a leadoff walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch by Willie Buchanan (1-2). Two batters later, Spencer Robinson smashed a two-run homer for a 5-3 Wingate lead. The Eagles got to within one run of that lead in the bottom of the eighth when Mills Rogers singled home Achberger, but the Bulldogs countered with five runs in the ninth inning off Eagle reliever Mark Carroll. Siega-Riz homered with one out to give the Bulldogs a two-run lead at 6-4. Benton singled to left and scored on a Blair Troutman double for a 7-4 Wingate advantage. Jay Barnes singled to score Troutman while Robinson doubled to put two runners on with two outs. Grayson Tanner singled home Barnes and Robinson for a 10-4 lead. The Bulldogs' five runs came on six hits. Five of those hits came with two outs in the final inning.
The Eagles could only muster one run in the ninth as Brandon Burchfield hit a leadoff single and scored on an Achberger double to put the final score at 10-5. Bryan Bialecki earned the win for Wingate after completing seven innings and giving up just three earned runs on four hits.
The Eagles travel to Spartanburg, South Carolina on April 4 for a regional showdown against USC Upstate before heading to Hickory, North Carolina for a weekend SAC series at Lenoir-Rhyne on April 6 and 7.
