Eagles sweep Bears

Hickory, N.C. - The Carson-Newman College Eagles (26-16, 14-5) swept Lenoir-Rhyne College (32-12, 11-8), 2-0 and 6-5, in a doubleheader Friday afternoon at Bears Field to take over sole possession of first place in the South Atlantic Conference standings.
Game One - Carson-Newman 2, Lenoir-Rhyne 0 Matt Teague (Belmont, N.C.) and Steve Cishek (East Falmouth, Mass.) combined to shut out the Bears on four hits en route to the win.
Teague (5-1) pitched 6.2 innings to go along with three strikeouts while Cishek picked up his first save of the year.
The Eagles scored on a Bear error in the second inning while Carson-Newman's Jonathan McMahon (Charlotte, N.C.) added an RBI single in the seventh frame.
L-R senior Andrew Cooper (Belmont, N.C./East Gaston HS) suffered the loss and fell to 2-1 on the season despite allowing just one earned run in seven innings pitched to go along with six strikeouts.
Game Two - Carson-Newman 6, Lenoir-Rhyne 5 Carson-Newman took advantage of five Lenoir-Rhyne errors and held on for the win after taking a 5-0 lead.
The Bears tied the contest with five runs in the bottom of the fourth inning highlighted by senior shortstop Taylor MacCurdy's (Charlotte, N.C./Providence HS) two-run double.
However, Carson-Newman's Langdon Potts (Jefferson City, Tenn.) broke the five-all tie with a sacrifice fly in the top of the sixth inning which proved to be the game-winner.
Corbin Arial (Elgin, S.C.) improved to 1-1 on the year with the win for the Eagles while Mark Carroll (Morristown, Tenn.) registered his sixth save of the season.
L-R junior Josh Keller (Catfish, N.C./Methodist College) dropped to 2-3 after being ticketed with the loss. Nick Achberger (Anderson, S.C.) led Carson-Newman with three hits on the afternoon.
MacCurdy had two hits and two runs batted in for the Bears.
The two teams wrap up the weekend series Saturday at Noon at Bears Field.
