Eagles win 4-1, Sweep Bulldogs
April 2, 2007
Game 2
JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. -- The Carson-Newman Eagles used a complete game effort and timely hitting to knock off Wingate 4-1 Saturday afternoon at the Silver Diamond Baseball Complex in Jefferson City. The win gives the Eagles a doubleheader sweep of the Bulldogs, and keeps C-N at least one game ahead in the SAC standings.
Wingate quickly jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning.
Leadoff batter Nick Siega-Riz singled to start the game. After Carson-Newman starter Cole Draughn (Science Hill, Ky.) retired the next two batters, Bulldog first baseman Blair Troutman drove a double to right-center to give Wingate a 1-0 lead. It would be the last time that Wingate threatened.
Carson-Newman pulled in front with two runs in the bottom of the third.
Junior Cory McGinnis walked to leadoff the inning. After Burchfield and Potts each grounded out, Nick Achberger's single to left plated McGinnis to tie the game, 1-1. Achberger advanced to third on a wild pitch and a throwing error into centerfield by Wingate catcher Tim Cottrell. He then scored to give the Eagles a 2-1 lead on a single to right by Long.
Leftfielder Adam Kefauver, who came into the game in the top of the sixth, singled to right to start the inning. Pinch-hitter Joe Kugler (Cleveland, Tenn.) slapped a single to left past a drawn-in infield to give the Eagles runners on first and second with nobody out. After Tyler Wynn (LaGrange, Ga.) drew a walk to load the bases, shortstop Mills Rogers (Simpsonville, S.C.) singled back up the middle to push the lead to 3-1.
The Eagles added one more to the lead, as McGinnis lined off of Bulldog reliever Zak Laws to plate Kugler.
Draughn went the distance to pick up the win for the Eagles. He improves to 6-1 on the season.
Carson-Newman (24-13, 12-4 SAC) and Wingate (16-22, 8-8 SAC) will conclude their three game series on Sunday afternoon at the Silver Diamond Baseball Complex in Jefferson City. First pitch is at 1 p.m.
