JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. - The Carson-Newman track & field team will head to the Buc Dome to compete in two high quality meets.
The weekend begins on Feb. 5-6 at the Buccaneer Invitational. The first day is headlined by jumping events, weight throw and distance events on the track. Day two will consist of sprinting events, shot put, pole vault and triple jump.
"The first meet was good because after 330 days of not competing it allowed us to shake the rust off" says Director of Track & Field and Cross Country David Needs. "There will be a lot of uncertanties this year but we'll be looking to improve as we go."
The 2021 Buccaneer Invitational field consists of Dvision One teams such as host ETSU, Tennessee State, USC Upstate, Western Carolina along with Division-II foes Converse, King, Montevallo, North Greenville, Southern Wesleyan, Tusculum, and in-state rival Milligan.
"When we got the news that there would be no Conference championships this year that didn't change our mission," says Needs. "Our goal is to go to nationals and be successful. This meet is an opputrtunity to improve our regional and national rankings."
On Sunday, Feb. 7, the Eagle runners will look to make the meet namesake proud at the 2021 "Run As Fast As You Can" Meet also in Johnson City. The distance runners last competed on Jan. 31 at the KMS Open with Raymond Brugmans finishing just 1.57 seconds behind the school record time in the 800 meter run in his first time competing in the event. Four personal bests were also set in Birmingham.
The field for sunday includes host ETSU and Division II foes Queens, Lees-McRae, and West Georgia.
"Our runners came in August for the preperation of a cross country season and that didn't happen," says Needs. "But you still see kids running around Mossy Creek and working hard. You want to talk about dedication, that's a hallmark of who they are."
The Eagles are scheduled next week off before heading to the Finn Pincus Invitational at Roanoke College in Salem, Va. Feb. 19-20.
