Eagles Can't Finish Comeback at King
Dec. 15, 2008
BRISTOL, Tenn. – A hot start by King College to begin each half was more than Carson-Newman could overcome Monday night.
The Tornado (9-2) opened the game with a 15-4 run, and came out of half-time with an 18-4 outburst to down the Eagles 88-82.
Mark Dockery led the King offensive attack with 25 points, including a 6-of-10 effort from three-point range. Kyle Savely was right behind him with 22 points, while Eddie Piccinini contributed 11.
Carson-Newman (4-6), playing without leading scorer Joey Cameron, was paced by the 16-point effort of Bobby Guyton. Andrew Johnson and Darron Maxtion each added 15 points, while Jared Stephens finished with 10.
King did the majority of its damage from behind the arc, connecting on 14-of-26 long-range shots. The Tornado made six of their first eight attempts from down town, and didn't record a two-point basket until the score was 28-24.
Despite falling behind by double digits in the first 3:10 of the contest, Carson-Newman battled back to take a 50-44 lead at intermission.
King shot 44.8% in the second half to the Eagles' 34.8%. Carson-Newman finished the game with 25 turnovers.
The Eagles held a 41-28 advantage in rebounding, led by Guyton with nine and Johnson and Maxtion with eight apiece.
With the win, NAIA King College sweeps the season series with the Eagles. The Tornado came out on top of an offensive shootout, 126-119, on November 15 in Jefferson City.
Carson-Newman will return to action Wednesday with a road trip to the University of Alabama-Huntsville. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
