Eagles bury school-record 20 treys in win over Brevard
Jan. 21, 2009
JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. -- The Carson-Newman men's basketball team tied a school record in three-pointers, sinking 20, in a 98-91 South Atlantic Conference victory over Brevard College Wednesday night at Holt Fieldhouse.
The Eagles were 20-of-45 (44.4 percent) from behind the arc to tie the record, which was set in last year's 93-68 win at North Greenville on Feb. 6, 2008. The 45 attempts is also a school record.
With the win, C-N improves to 6-11 overall and 3-3 in the SAC. Brevard drops to 9-7 on the season and 2-5 in conference play.
C-N associate head coach Chuck Benson improves to 3-0 when filling in for Eagles head coach Dale Clayton, who missed Wednesday's game to attend the birth of his first grandchild. Benson also coached the Eagles to victory against Newberry and Catawba last season.
Sophomore guard Adam Plavich (Dalton, Ga.) scored a career-high 21 points on 7-of-10 shooting from three-point range to lead C-N. Bobby Guyton (Jesup, Ga.) tossed in 17 points, while Jesse McMurray (Weber City, Va.) chipped in 14 and Zach Hyatte (Dayton, Tenn.) added a season-high 12 points. Jordan Dixon (Clinton, Tenn.) finished with 10 points in the win.
Jonathan Whitson carried the Tornados with 26 points, while Sam Carlisle and Joseph Chilton each had 10 points for Brevard.
C-N shot 40.3 percent (31-of-77) from the field and were 16-of-22 (72.7 percent) from the free-throw line. The Tornados were 33-for-68 (48.5 percent) from the floor and made just 18-of-33 (54.5 percent) free throw attempts.
Brevard dominated the boards by outrebounding the Eagles 53-38, including 20 offensive rebounds. C-N made up for the lack of rebounds by forcing 32 turnovers, including 16 steals.
Neither team could hold a lead in the first half, as there were nine lead changes over the first 20 minutes.
The Tornados opened the contest with a 10-3 lead before C-N went on a 10-2 run capped by a Plavich three-pointer to claim its first lead of the game at 13-12 with 14:48 left in the first half.
The Eagles led by as much as six points late in the half at 34-28 with 3:13 remaining, but Brevard went on a 12-3 scoring spurt to regain the lead at 40-37 at the 1:06 mark.
However, back-to-back threes by Dixon and Plavich over the final minute gave C-N a 43-40 advantage at the half.
The first seven baskets the Eagles made in the second half were from behind the arc as they pushed their lead to 67-54 on a trey by McMurray with 9:25 left.
C-N extended its lead to as much as 24 points at 87-63 with 4:50 remaining, but Brevard made things interesting by closing out the game on a 28-11 run.
The Eagles will return to action on Saturday, Jan. 24 in a SAC matchup at Lenoir-Rhyne. Tipoff is set for 8 p.m.
