Nov. 15, 2008
JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. - The King Tornado snuck past the Carson-Newman Eagles in the season opener with a final score of 126-119. The Eagles and Tornado both played a fast pace game. The final score ties the most points allowed in a game for the Eagles in school history. Catawba also tallied 126 points on the Eagles last year in a three point overtime win.
The Eagles jumped out to an early 8-0 lead over King, who would come back to tie the game 8-8 after three minutes of play. Throughout the game, King and Carson-Newman rallied back and forth and the score increased. Neither team was able to make a substantial lead at any point during the game.
Both teams played a physical game, King and Carson-Newman tallying 32 and 30 founds respectively. In addition to the fouls, both teams combined for a total of 77 rebounds.
Leading the Eagles was junior Joey Cameron (Tuskegee, Ala.) with 24 points and nine rebounds. He was aided by senior Andrew Johnson (Cairo, Ga.) with 18 points. Topping the Eagle charts with assists was junior Jordan Dixon (Clinton, Tenn.) with eight. Dixon also contributed ten points and three rebounds.
King College was led to victory by junior Kyle Savely (Corydon, Ind.) who added 30 points, seven assists and four rebounds. Sophomore Mark Dockery (Nickelsville, Va.) dropped 27 points, two assists, and four rebounds.
"I was pleased that we gave ourselves the chance to win tonight," said head coach Dale Clayton, "We played tonight like a first game and made some mistakes that we wouldn't have made after three or four games. King is well coached and played hard tonight. The only way that we are going to get better is to play games."
The Eagles will be back in action Tuesday, November 18 as they face Lees-McRae College in Banner Elk, N.C. at 7 p.m.
