Shealy Fires Perfect Game, C-N Blasts Brevard, 9-1 and 8-0

BREVARD, N.C. - Carson-Newman freshman Mary Shealy (Clinton , S.C.) fired a five-inning perfect game in the nightcap and the Lady Eagles hit three home runs on the day to pick up a South Atlantic Conference sweep of Brevard College on Wednesday afternoon in Brevard N.C. C-N grabbed the first game 9-1 in six innings, before taking game two 8-0.
With the win, the Lady Eagles improve to 25-13 on the year and 9-5 in SAC play. C-N has won 9-of-its last-10 games in conference play.
Game 1: Carson-Newman 9, Brevard 1 (6)
Brevard's Jennifer Gift (7-11) fell victim in the first game of the doubleheader. A fielder's interference call extended the fifth inning as Carson-Newman plated eight runs in the inning to take the commanding lead.
C-N's Stephanie Templeton (Ringgold, Ga.) picked up the win, allowing one run on five hits in the game. She is now 5-0 in league play.
Brevard scored in the bottom of the third. Sarah Carlos sent a two-out offering to the right centerfield fence for a double. The next batter, Beth Brooker, drove a pitch to shallow right field scoring Carlos. Brooker was thrown out on the play trying to advance to second to end the inning with Brevard up, 1-0.
Carson-Newman put most of their runs across in the fifth. Gift retired the first batter on a grounder. Amber Hewitt (Ringgold, Ga.) and Leah Price (Spring City, Tenn.)both walked to give the Lady Eagles runners on first and second. The next batter, Jessie Howard (Knoxville, Tenn.), hit a grounder back to the mound that Gift fielded and fired over to third, but the umpires stopped the play and awarded Hewitt third on fielder's interference.
The Lady Eagles took advantage of the play as Whitney Durham (Rossville, Ga.) singled home a run and Sarah Little (Calhoun, Ga.) cleared the bases with a two-out double before Amber Palmer (Kennesaw, Ga.) capped the scoring with a two-run shot to straightaway centerfield for an 8-1 lead.
Carson-Newman put across their final run in the sixth as Templeton drove in Price on a sacrifice fly to right.
Game 2: Carson-Newman 8, Brevard 0 (5)
Shealy's perfect game and back-to-back home runs in the first inning off Liz Houser (9-10) put Carson-Newman up early in the 8-0 win in five innings.
The Lady Eagles scored four in the top of the first as Durham drove home Howard with a double to left center and Little and third baseman Whitney Kee (Knoxville, Tenn.) drove out back-to-back home runs to give Shealy the early lead.
Shealy retird all 15 batters she faced and finished the day with three strikeouts.
Three more runs crossed the plate in the second as Howard, Templeton and Kee came around to score to make the lead 7-0.
Templeton drove in the final run of the game in the fifth with a sacrifice fly to right field deep enough to score Brianne Coon.
Brevard takes the field again on Saturday, April 18th, as they host their final South Atlantic Conference matchup of the season against Lenoir-Rhyne. First pitch of the doubleheader is set for 1 p.m. Carson-Newman keeps to the road for the SAC finale, playing at Wingate also on Saturday at 1 p.m.
