Lady Eagles drop first game of season in split with Queens

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Carson-Newman softball team suffered its first loss of the season Tuesday as it went on the road and split a doubleheader with Queens University. The Lady Eagles won the first game 9-0 but dropped the second one, 5-4.
Carson-Newman pounded out 16 hits in the opener, led by Spring City, Tenn. native Leah Price's 3-for-3 effort. Five Lady Eagles collected two hits apiece, including Jessie Howard (Knoxville, Tenn.), Mary Shealy (Clinton, S.C.), Sarah Little (Calhoun, Ga.), Whitney Kee (Knoxville, Tenn.) and Amber Palmer (Kennesaw, Ga.).
Shealy picked up the win in the pitching circle, allowing just two hits in five innings of work. Brittany Linton (Marietta, Ga.) worked the sixth inning.
In the nightcap, Queens scored one run in the home half of the seventh inning to escape with the victory.
Shealy took the loss for Carson-Newman, giving up four earned runs on nine hits and four base-on-balls. Palmer and Price each went 2-for-3 at the plate. Amber Hewitt (Ringgold, Ga.) and Palmer drove in a run apiece.
Carson-Newman will travel to North Greenville Friday afternoon before returning home to host Bellarmine on Saturday at 1 p.m.
