Lady Eagles Split With Erskine

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. -- The Carson-Newman softball team split with Erskine College Wednesday afternoon at the Lady Eagle Softball Complex, winning the first game 9-4 and falling in the second contest 6-5.
With the split, the Lady Eagles are now 11-5 on the season, while Erskine is 12-9.
Game 1
The Lady Eagles pounded out 13 hits to beat the Flying Fleet in Game 1, 9-4.
Sophomore Amber Hewitt's (Ringgold, Ga.) two-out single in the second inning sparked the Lady Eagles to an early 4-0 lead.
Hewitt drove an offering from Erskine starter Lauren Gunter through the left side of the infield to score Sara Little (Calhoun, Ga.) and Whitney Kee (Knoxville, Tenn.) to give C-N a 2-0 lead
Jessie Howard (Knoxville, Tenn.) and Brianne Coon (Orlando, Fla.) would follow with back-to-back singles to score Hewitt and push it to 3-0.
C-N would put the game out of reach, adding three runs in the bottom of the fifth, pounding out three hits and taking advantage of two walks in the frame.
Lady Eagle starter Mary Shealy (WP 9-2, Clinton, S.C.) worked 5.1 innings for the win. She also went 3-for-4 at the plate with a double and three RBIs.
Erskine starter Lauren Gunter (LP 5-4) was tagged with the loss after giving up eight runs on 10 hits in 4 2/3 innings of work.
Katee Knapp and Lindsey LaPrad finished with two hits each for Erskine.
Game 2
Erskine rallied for six runs in the top of the fifth inning on its way to winning the second game, 6-5.
The Flying Fleet finished with nine hits, while C-N managed seven hits.
Little drove in a run in the bottom of the first with a single to center field to give the Lady Eagles a 1-0 lead. Whitney Durham (Rossville, Ga.) was later hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, scoring Shealy to push the Lady Eagles' lead to 2-0.
Erskine's Kayla Vinson delivered a two-run single in the top of the fifth inning to spark a six-run inning by the Flying Fleet. Erskine led 6-2 heading into the bottom of the inning.
C-N responded with three runs in the home half of the fifth to trim Erskine's lead to 6-5 but the Lady Eagles failed to produce any runs over the final two innings.
Shealy (LP 9-3) picked up the loss after giving up six runs on eight hits in 4 1/3 innings of work.
Erskine starter Rebekah George (WP 6-3) earned the win. George gave up five runs (three earned) on six hits and struck out four in 4 1/3 innings on the mound. She also went 2-for-3 at the plate.
Little and Howard collected two hits each to lead C-N.
