Lady Eagles Earn Split at Eckerd
March 16, 2009
ST. PETERSBURG, The Carson-Newman Eagles rallied for a 6-3 win in game two to split a doubleheader with Eckerd College on Monday afternoon at the Turley Athletic Complex in St. Petersburg, Fla. C-N dropped game one 3-2 after an Eckerd walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh.
With the win, C-N improves to 15-7 on the year, while Eckerd is now 10-16 overall.
Senior Danielle Sedoris' walk-off single gave the Tritons a win in game one, 6-3.
Julia Kraus and Amanda Kolonick drew seventh-inning walks before Sedoris ripped her game-winning single through the middle to end it.
Alex Sasso put the Tritons on the board early, slicing a two-run double down the leftfield line to give Eckerd an early 2-0 lead, while starter Mackenzie Dawson retired the first eight batters she faced.
Dawson would shut down the Lady Eagles until the fourth, when Sara Little (Calhoun, Ga.) ripped a solo home run to cut the Tritons' lead to 2-1.
Sophomore Whitney Durham (Rossville, Ga.) would add an RBI-single in the fifth to score Leah Price (Spring City, Tenn.) and knot the game at 2-2.
Dawson (5-4), earned the victory after pitching a complete seven innings while scattering six hits and allowing two runs. Mary Shealy (LP, 11-5) took the loss for Carson-Newman.
In game two, the Lady Eagles took an early lead in a two-run first inning that could have ended much worse.
Carson-Newman worked the bases loaded before Little walked to push across a run and Whitney Kee was hit by a pitch, making it 2-0.
Eckerd starting pitcher Christina Hughes was the beneficiary of good fortune as a single by Amber Palmer (Kennesaw, Ga.) hit a base runner, before a foul out and fielder's choice allowed Hughes to escape with minimal damage.
Eckerd cut the Eagles' lead in half in the bottom of the third with a run-scoring single from Sedoris. The Tritons rallied to take a 3-2 lead in the fourth as Janielle Sedoris hit her first career homerun, a two-run shot, to left.
In the top of the fifth, however, Kee took the wind out of the Tritons' sails as she launched a two-run homer to center to give Carson-Newman the lead for good.
Hughes took the loss for Eckerd while Brittany Linton (WP, 3-1) recorded the win for the Eagles to move to 2-0 on the C-N road trip.
C-N returns to action on Wednesday at Georgia College in Milledgeville, Ga. First pitch is at 1 p.m.
