JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The Anderson Trojans (7-9-1, 4-6-1 SAC) defeated the Carson-Newman (3-14, 1-10 SAC) women's soccer team 4-2 in the Eagles' final home match and senior night.
"We are going to lose a great group of seniors," coach Richard Moodie said. "They have been here through the highs and lows. They have just given us everything and being resilient and making sure these young ladies are buying into what we are doing."
The Trojans took an early lead with an unassisted goal by Lyssa Engle. Engle rocketed a shot from just outside the right side of the 18-yard box that soared through the box to the left side netting of the goal for her fifth of the season
Junior Mikayla Gregg (Newport, Tenn.) tied it up 14 minutes later, her fifth goal of the year. Senior Susann Kneifel (Germany) stepped up to a C-N free kick and sent a lofted ball to the right corner of the Trojans' defensive third. Gregg gently greeted the ball before chipping it up and over Anderson's keeper.
In the 24th minute, AU was awarded a penalty kick after a hand ball was called in the box. Faith Johannes capitalized on the penalty giving her team a 2-1 lead.
Seven minutes into the second half, Kneifel sent a bullet of a left-footed free kick blazing to the back of the net to tie up the match.
Engle scored the winning goal in the 59th minute assisted by Johannes. In the 70th, Paige Gowans-Smith sealed the Trojans' 4-2 victory. Fullback Kristin Herbert sent a long ball behind the C-N defensive line; Gowans-Smith ran onto it, beat the keeper, and put the ball in the net.
AU outshot the Eagles 13 to 11, but C-N had nine shots on goal to the Trojans' seven. Both senior captain Sidnee Edwards (Knoxville, Tenn.) and Gregg each released three shots for C-N and landed them all on target.
Gregg has one assist for the season and leads the Eagles in both points and goals with 11 and five respectively. Senior Maleya Garrison (Hendersonville, Tenn.) holds second place with three goals and six points while freshman center back Helen Seed (England) has two goals, one assist and five points for third.
