JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Carson-Newman (2-5, 0-2 SAC) resumes conference play at Brevard (2-5, 0-3 SAC) tomorrow at 1:30 p.m. The C-N women's soccer program holds a 6-0-2 record against Brevard, never having lost.
The Eagles are coming off a devastating 2-1 overtime loss at Trevecca last Wednesday. Junior Mikayla Gregg (Newport, Tenn.) put up her first goal of the season in the 70th minute to tie up the game. TNU stole the victory three minutes into OT.
"That was a heartbreaker," Carson-Newman head soccer coach Richard Moodie said. "I don't think that we deserved to lose, but I don't think that we deserved to win either."
The Tornados lost 2-0 to Newberry on Sept. 24th for their third conference loss.
In its first match of the year, Brevard fell 5-0 to King University.
"It's disappointing right now," Coach Moodie said, "We're just underachieving. We're very young, we know that, but we have so much talent."
The Eagles played King to a 3-0 win on Sept. 17. Play recommenced post halftime with the score still set at zeros. Freshman Casidy Simonis (Pinkerington, Oh.) opened the scoring in the 51st minute off a pass from senior captain Sidnee Edwards (Knoxville, Tenn.).
Five minutes later, senior Maleya Garrison (Hendersonville, Tenn.) supplied the Eagles' second goal, her second of the year.
With ten minutes remaining in the game, freshman Camilla Olsson (Norway) set the final score to 3-0.
"The season is still young," Coach Moodie said. "I think it's important that we recognize that."
Last season, Brevard tied C-N 2-2 after two overtime periods on McCown Field. Edwards put in the first goal off a pass from Gabrielle Gianeselli (Knoxville, Tenn.) eight minutes into second half. The Tornadoes tied it up two minutes later thanks to Kaitlin Burns.
"There's always something to play for," Coach Moodie said. "With this group, I wouldn't put it past them to finish strong."
Eleven minutes later, Gregg volleyed in a corner kick taken by Gianeselli to take a 2-1 lead. Brevard's Megan Jenkins answered in the 72nd minute for a final score of 2-2.
"We will prepare the players tomorrow," Coach Moodie said, "for a hard game and get them ready for Saturday."
The Tornados and Eagles kick off tomorrow at 1:30 p.m.
