JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The Carson-Newman (2-8, 0-5 SAC) dropped a 4-3 heartbreaker to Lincoln Memorial (7-2, 5-1 SAC) in double overtime earlier tonight.
"This week we focused a lot on shooting," Carson-Newman assistant women's soccer coach Sarah Tompkins said. "It helped us a lot in today's game and built up our confidence."
Senior Sidnee Edwards (Knoxville, Tenn.) put up her first goal of the season in the 20th minute. Sophomore midfielder Gabrielle Gianeselli (Knoxville, Tenn.) chased down a ball sent to the left corner of the field and sent a left-footed cross into the box. Edwards made contact with her head putting the ball into the right side netting.
The Eagles went into halftime leading 1-0. Three minutes into second half, C-N keeper Katy Hill (Farragut, Tenn.) came out of her box to clear the ball. LMU's Fernanda Miaci beat Hill to the ball and flicked it with the outside of her right foot to the far corner of the net for her fourth goal of the season.
In the 62nd minute, LMU's Brittany Jenkins received her second yellow card resulting in a red card leaving the Railsplitters down a player for the remainder of the match.
Miaci blasted a shot from 25 yards out for her second goal of the game giving the Railsplitters a 2-1 lead 18 minutes later. "[Miaci] was their best player," Coach Tompkins said. "She took it to us."
In the 69th minute, Gianeselli was fouled in the box by LMU's keeper and C-N was awarded a penalty kick. Junior Mikayla Gregg (Newport, Tenn.) stepped up and capitalized on the opportunity; she now has two goals on the season.
Seconds later, Gianeselli slotted a pass into the 6-yard box for freshman center back Helen Seed (England) to hit first time. Seed stole a 3-2 lead back from LMU with her first goal of the year.
Nicole McKinney scored an unassisted goal in the 71st minute to send the match into overtime.
With a minute and a half remaining in the second overtime, Miaci put up her third goal of the night, sixth of the season, and the golden goal of the night for a 4-3 final in favor of LMU.
"We played great," Coach Tompkins said, "out shot them, and dominated the entire game." The Eagles outshot LMU 26 to 16 and 11 to 11 in shots on goal. Hill tallied eight saves.
Sophomore Nora Logan (Charlotte, N.C.) came in at the striker position today for C-N. "Nora did great," Coach Tompkins said. "She just came back from an injury and she pushed herself. She gave us 100 percent."
C-N heads to Newberry this Saturday for a 3:30 p.m. kickoff.
