Lady Eagles Host Limestone Wednesday

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The Carson-Newman Lady Eagles (6-2, 4-0 South Atlantic Conference) women’s basketball team will face the Limestone Saints (5-1, 2-0 Conference Carolinas) at Holt Fieldhouse on Wednesday evening at 6 p.m.

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The Carson-Newman Lady Eagles (6-2, 4-0 South Atlantic Conference) women's basketball team will face the Limestone Saints (5-1, 2-0 Conference Carolinas) at Holt Fieldhouse on Wednesday evening at 6 p.m.

Carson-Newman is coming off a 66-58 victory over Catawba on Saturday, as the Lady Eagles have started their conference schedule 4-0, leading the SAC.

"This will be another stiff out of conference challenge against a team that played in the NCAA tournament last year and is currently sitting just outside the top 25," said Carson-Newman head coach Mike Mincey.  "Limestone is a team that's won a lot over the last several years and are off to another great year with a 5-1 record. They lost a lot from last year but have reloaded and seem to be playing really well right now.  As always we'll have to play solid basketball to get a win tomorrow night."

Carson-Newman trailed 43-33 with 12:25 to play before unleashing a furious 18-0 run to take a 51-43 lead with 7:31 to go, and the Lady Eagles held on as Carson-Newman took the top spot in the SAC standings with the victory, becoming the lone school to start the conference schedule unbeaten at 4-0.

For the second straight game, the Lady Eagles were led in scoring by senior Chante' Markus (Hummelstown, Pa.) as she scored a career-high 16 points and she hit four 3-pointers, two of which fueled Carson-Newman's 18-0 run to take control of the game. Markus was joined in double-figure scoring by junior Jassmine Franklin (Lexington, Ky.) and sophomore Haley Coffelt (Tracy City, Tenn.) as both set career-highs in scoring with 13 points and 10 points respectively.

Markus' scoring surge over the past two games has put her as the lone Lady Eagle averaging double-digit points per game, with 11.1 to lead the team.

Wednesday's game is a Saints is a makeup of a game that was originally scheduled for Nov. 13, but was postponed due to unforeseen travel constraints for Limestone.

The Saints, coached by Corey Fox, have been nationally ranked at times this year and 5-1 to begin the 2013-14 season. Limestone comes into Wednesday's matchup on a three-game winning streak, reeling off wins against USC Aiken, North Greenville, and most recently a 75-59 triumph over Pfeiffer last Saturday.

Limestone is led in scoring by Celestra Warren, who averages 20.8 points per game, and the Saints have four players averaging double-digit points per game.

The Saints were tabbed for a second-place finish in the Conference Carolinas preseason poll, behind Barton. Limestone graduated three 1,000-point scorers off last year's team.

Wednesday's game will be carried on the Eagle Sports Network's flagship station WPFT-FM 106.3 FM, with coverage beginning at 5:45 p.m. with "The Countdown to Tipoff," and live video is also available on www.cneagles.com.
