Carson-Newman Game Notes - Coker
JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The Carson-Newman Lady Eagles (3-1, 1-0 South Atlantic Conference) women's basketball team will continue their pre-Thanksgiving conference games by traveling to Hartsville, S.C., to face the Coker Cobras (3-0, 1-0 South Atlantic Conference) at Timberlake-Lawton Gymnasium on Saturday at 2 p.m.
Carson-Newman is coming off of a victory in its conference opener, defeating rival Tusculum 78-68 at Holt Fieldhouse last Wednesday night.
"I was proud of our team and our kids and the way we battled," said Carson-Newman head coach Mike Mincey. "Now we're focused on Coker and to try and get a win tomorrow."
Carson-Newman never led in the first half after Tusculum began the game on a 14-2 run, and the Lady Eagles erased a seven-point halftime deficit and at one point a nine-point deficit midway in the second half only to rally back to collect the victory over their in-state rival.
The Lady Eagles were led by the 21 points of sophomore Jai Jai McLaughlin (Knoxville, Tenn.), and she was joined in double figures by senior Chante' Markus (Hummelstown, Pa.) and freshman Kailyn Brooks (Lafayette, Tenn.) who both scored 14 points for Carson-Newman.
Carson-Newman has now won its last two games, both in comeback fashion. The Lady Eagles are led in scoring by Brooks with 14 points in her first game, but the leading scorer who has played in all four games is McLaughlin by averaging 10.8 points per contest.
Coker was picked to finish ninth in the preseason SAC poll, yet the Cobras are off to a 3-0 start and began conference play with a 76-62 victory at Newberry, the team picked to win the SAC, last Wednesday.
"To beat Newberry by fourteen, a team that didn't lose at home all season, you can't help but be impressed by them," Mincey said. "They mirror us a lot, they have some good shooters, they have some penetrators, they have some good athletes, so they'll do a lot of penetration, a lot of ball screens, try to kick it out and shoot three's, they are really a complete basketball team. If we don't play well on the road, they will put it to us."
Coker was led against Newberry by Tanesha Stenson and Priscilla Fenty, who both collected a double-double. Stenson led the tea with 20 points, while Fenty had 14 and both players collected 10 rebounds. Fenty leads the Cobras by averaging 12.3 points per game.
Carson-Newman fell to Coker last year in the SAC-Conference Carolinas Challenge 59-56 at Tex Turner Arena in Harrogate, Tenn., on Nov. 9, 2012. Carson-Newman and Coker were tied at 56 with 25 seconds remaining before Coker's Hailey Yohn hit a three-pointer with twenty seconds remaining in the contest to give the Cobras a 59-56 lead, which would be the final score.
Saturday's game will be carried on the Eagle Sports Network's flagship station WPFT-FM 106.3 FM, with coverage beginning at 1:45 p.m. with "The Countdown to Tipoff," and live audio also available on www.cneagles.com.
