Carson-Newman Game Notes - Queens Home
JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The Carson-Newman Lady Eagles (14-11, 11-8 South Atlantic Conference) women's basketball team will play for the final time at home in the regular season by hosting the Queens Royals (5-18, 4-15 South Atlantic Conference) at Holt Fieldhouse on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m.
Carson-Newman is looking to win its third straight game, after posting victories this week at Brevard and most recently, over Anderson in overtime last Wednesday at Holt Fieldhouse.
"We're still in the top four in the league right now and there's going to be a lot of shakeup in these next three games," said Carson-Newman head women's basketball coach Mike Mincey. "We know that if we take care of ourselves we'll be in good shape."
After Anderson finished the second half on a 7-2 run to send the game to overtime tied at 76, Carson-Newman shot well in the extra period, outscoring Anderson 13-4 in overtime to snap a three-game losing streak in the series with Anderson.
Carson-Newman was led in scoring by the 17 points of sophomore Jai Jai McLaughlin (Knoxville, Tenn.), as she proved key for the Lady Eagles down the stretch by going 8-for-10 at the free throw line. McLaughlin was joined in double figures by three other Lady Eagles. Sophomore Tatum Burstrom (Maryville, Tenn.) scored 12 points in the first half and finished with 15 for the game as she hit a pair of 3-pointers. Junior Lashawnda Peacher (Springfield, Tenn.) scored double-digit points for the second time in three days with 14 points including going 10-for-12 at the charity stripe. Freshman Kaitlyn Cupples (Clinton, Tenn.) scored 10 points as she hit double-digits for the third straight contest.
Carson-Newman continues to be led in scoring by Burstrom, who is averaging 11 points per game.
The Lady Eagles will honor the lone member of this season's senior class, Chante' Markus (Hummelstown, Pa.) following Saturday's game.
"Chante' has had a good career," said Mincey. "She tore her ACL her freshman year and redshirted and didn't get a ton of minutes as a sophomore, but stepped in last year and got double-figure minutes and started some games. Then she came in this year and has been our second leading scorer and has just been a real key for us. I don't think we win the games we've won this year if we didn't have her on the team. Sad to see her go but I think Chante' has had a good career and good time here. I think she's ready to go on and take the world head on."
Earlier this season in Charlotte, the Royals topped the Lady Eagles 71-62 at the Levine Center on Jan. 11. The Royals used a 13-2 run midway through the second half to power away from the Lady Eagles. Markus scored a career-high 17 points as she made four 3-pointers helping her lead the Lady Eagles in scoring. She was joined in double-figures by Burstrom who made five 3-pointers in the nine-point loss.
Since the win over Carson-Newman, Queens has lost its last 11 games. The Royals, coached by Susan Yow, are now 5-18 and 4-15 in conference play, with the losing streak putting Queens in last place in the SAC standings. Queens is led in scoring by Shonice Pettaway, who is averaging 18.0 points per game, which is the second-best mark in the SAC entering Saturday's action.
Saturday's game will be carried on the Eagle Sports Network's flagship station WPFT-FM 106.3 FM, with coverage beginning at 1:45 p.m. with "The Countdown to Tipoff," and live video is also available on www.cneagles.com.
