Lady Eagles Host Catawba in SAC Quarterfinals
JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The fourth-seeded Carson-Newman Lady Eagles (15-13, 12-10 South Atlantic Conference) women’s basketball team will host the fifth-seeded Catawba Lady Indians (14-12, 12-10 South Atlantic Conference) in the quarterfinals of the 2014 Food Lion SAC Women’s Basketball Championship at Holt Fieldhouse on Wednesday evening at 6 p.m.

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The fourth-seeded Carson-Newman Lady Eagles (15-13, 12-10 South Atlantic Conference) women's basketball team will host the fifth-seeded Catawba Lady Indians (14-12, 12-10 South Atlantic Conference) in the quarterfinals of the 2014 Food Lion SAC Women's Basketball Championship at Holt Fieldhouse on Wednesday evening at 6 p.m.
The Lady Eagles and Lady Indians split their two matchups during the regular season, as Carson-Newman earned one of the top four seeds in the conference tournament.
"We are excited to be hosting the first round of the conference tournament with our men's team tomorrow," said Carson-Newman head coach Mike Mincey. "This will be the first time in many years that both teams have been home for a quarterfinal doubleheader and we hope the fans will turnout to make Holt Fieldhouse a real home court advantage for both teams. Now that it's tournament time, anything can happen and with our league anyone 1-to-8 can jump up there and win it all."
Carson-Newman is coming off of a 50-49 comeback victory at Newberry last Saturday in Newberry, S.C.
Junior Whitney Kyle (Jefferson City, Tenn.) willed Carson-Newman to the victory by scoring the final eight points in the contest after C-N trailed 48-42 with 56 seconds to play. After cutting Newberry's lead to 49-48, she stole the ensuing inbounds pass and scored with a right-side layup to give Carson-Newman a 50-49 lead over Newberry with 14 seconds to play, which would be the final score.
Carson-Newman won the first meeting against Catawba 66-58 at Holt Fieldhouse on Saturday Dec. 7. Carson-Newman trailed 43-33 with 12:25 to play before unleashing a furious 18-0 run to take a 51-43 lead with 7:31 to go, and the Lady Eagles held on as Carson-Newman took the top spot in the SAC standings with the victory, becoming the lone school to start the conference schedule unbeaten at 4-0. The Lady Eagles were led in scoring by senior Chante' Markus (Hummelstown, Pa.) as she scored a career-high 16 points and she hit four 3-pointers, two of which fueled Carson-Newman's 18-0 run to take control of the game.
Catawba won the second meeting 56-47 at Goodman Gymnasium on Feb. 1. Carson-Newman trailed only by a point at halftime, yet only scored four points in the first 10 minutes of the second half, as the Lady Eagles suffered their third straight loss in what would become a six-game losing streak. Carson-Newman was led in scoring by the 10 points of sophomore Tatum Burstrom (Maryville, Tenn.), her first double-digit scoring performance in the last three games.
Catawba and Carson-Newman finished with identical records of 12-10 in conference play yet the Lady Eagles won the tie-breaker due to their 1-1 record against Lenoir-Rhyne, compared to the Indians' mark of 0-2 against the top seed.
The Lady Indians, coached by Angie Morton are 14-12 this season, and enter the postseason having won two of its last three games, beating Brevard and Quuens before falling at LMU last Saturday 71-62. Catawba is led in scoring by Chloe Bully, who is averaging 13.9 points per game.
