Carson-Newman Game Notes - Brevard Home
JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The Carson-Newman Lady Eagles (9-5, 6-2 South Atlantic Conference) women's basketball team will host the Brevard Tornados (4-8, 3-5) at Holt Fieldhouse on Wednesday evening at 6 p.m.
Carson-Newman is home for its next two games, as the Lady Eagles have a share of the lead in the South Atlantic Conference standings going into Wednesday's game against Brevard.
"It is kind-of a must-win game, of course any home game is a must-win in this conference," said Carson-Newman head coach Mike Mincey. "After that disappointing setback at Queens on Saturday, we need to come in here and try to play much better basketball to get a win against a team that's on a two-game win streak. They had a blowout win against Tusculum and certainly a solid victory against Catawba.
The Lady Eagles are coming off of a 71-62 loss at Queens last Saturday in Charlotte, N.C. The Royals used a 13-2 run midway through the second half to power away from the Lady Eagles, as Carson-Newman falls for the second straight Saturday on the road to an opponent in North Carolina.
Carson-Newman senior Chante' Markus (Hummelstown, Pa.) scored a career-high 17 points as she made four 3-pointers helping her lead the Lady Eagles in scoring. She was joined in double-figures by sophomore Tatum Burstrom (Maryville, Tenn.), who made five 3-pointers in the nine-point loss.
Burstrom leads Carson-Newman by averaging 12.2 points per game, with Markus right behind her by averaging 10.9 points per contest.
Carson-Newman is tied atop the SAC standings with Coker at 6-2, although the Lady Eagles have already defeated the Cobras earlier this season, 71-63 on Nov. 23 in Hartsville, S.C. There is a four-way tie for third place, with Lenoir-Rhyne, Wingate, Catawba, and Lincoln Memorial all a game back of Carson-Newman and Coker at 5-3.
The Tornados, coached by Shannon Reid, are 4-8 this season with a 3-5 mark in conference play, posing conference wins over Tusculum (twice) and Catawba. Brevard has won its last two games, and beat Catawba 71-66 last Saturday behind 20 points from Katie Williams.
Madison Lenox leads Brevard by averaging 12.3 points per game, with Williams averaging 11 points per game. Brevard was picked to finish 11th out of 12 teams in the preseason SAC coaches poll.
Wednesday's game will be carried on the Eagle Sports Network's flagship station WPFT-FM 106.3 FM, with coverage beginning at 5:45 p.m. with "The Countdown to Tipoff," and live video is also available on www.cneagles.com.
