JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – In its final non-conference game of the season, Carson-Newman (0-5-2) played the final 70 minutes at a disadvantage and saw Montevallo (1-2-2) score three unanswered goals to drop a Monday afternoon affair at McCown Field.
"We created some great chances in the first 20 minutes," Carson-Newman head coach Stephen Lyons said. "If a couple of those are put away, we may be having a different conversation. The red card obviously changed the game and going down to 10 players. Even after that, the guys and the effort was phenomenal."
Antoine Torrent (Clermont ferrand, France) attempted the first shot of the match and it was a good opportunity. The sophomore's shot forced Montevallo goalkeeper Andre Etcheverry into his first saved.
Torrent had another scoring chance in the 13th minute. His header off a Maxime Wester (Brussel, Belgium) cross missed just wide of the near post.
The game took many turns, with the first turn coming in the 20th minute. On a ball played behind C-N's defense, goalkeeper Azrael Phillips (Mascot, Tenn.) came out of the box and was deemed to have touched the ball with his hands outside the box. He was shown a red card for denying the goal scoring chance and would force the Eagles to play down a man the for the final 70 minutes.
Despite playing at a disadvantage, C-N would take the lead off a counter attack. Ben Dukes (Southampton, England) sprinted forward and dribbled between two defenders, one of which eventually fouled him from behind, in the box, setting up a penalty kick opportunity. Mitchell Honcoop would take the penalty kick, beating Etcheverry to make it 1-0 Eagles in the 26th minute.
Honcoop has now scored C-N's last three goals, which have spanned five games.
Montevallo would level the match, on a free kick in the 37th minute. Seth Acton hooked a left-footed shot around a four-man C-N wall to tie the game.
Carson-Newman attempted the only shot in the final eight minutes of the opening half, with Rhydian Williams (Conwy, Wales) missing high.
Montevallo dominated the chances early in the second half. Buford made a 48th-minute save to keep things level early in the second half.
The many chances early on led to a go-ahead goal. Ian Palma's cross set up Dominic Kienzle, who headed home the ball into the lower left corner to make it 2-1 in the 60th minute.
After the goal, C-N would mount some opportunities. Most of them came off set pieces. Honcoop took the free kick, missing wide right in the 67th minute.
The Eagles started to limit some of the Falcons' chances, but could not get many of their own.
One of the best chances to equalize came in the 79th minute. Off a C-N corner kick, Dan Coles (Rugby, England) had his header from the center of the box saved by Etcheverry.
The Eagles attempted just one more shot, which was blocked. After moving players forward, Montevallo would seal the deal in the 86th minute. Victor Flores set up Tomas Prieto in the middle of the six-yard box to finish off win number one for the Falcons.
The shots category was dead even at seven at intermission, but the Falcons went on to attempt 10 of the 14 after halftime to outshoot C-N.
UM attempted six corners to C-N's two.
Carson-Newman now focuses on South Atlantic Conference play for the rest of the season, matching up with Newberry on Saturday afternoon. First touch is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. on FloSports.
