JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Two teams looking to get in the win column in 2025 meet on Wednesday afternoon as Carson-Newman (0-1-1) travels to Livingston, Alabama to clash with West Alabama (0-2) at 2:00 p.m.
For the third time in the past four seasons, Carson-Newman has a player with two goals through the first two games of a new season. In 2022, Nic Carsh scored a pair of goals against Spring Hill to have two after two. This past season, Mitchell Honcoop had a pair of first half goals in the season opener versus Trevecca Nazarene. Ben Dukes (Southampton, England) joins those lads as players to score twice through the first two games of a year since 2022. He scored his first in the season opener off a penalty kick and his second off a free kick just outside the box against Alabama Huntsville on Sunday.
Tomorrow's match is the last of a three-game road trip to start the 2025 season and another opportunity to try and snap struggles on the road. Over the past two seasons, C-N is 2-14-4 on the road and is unbeaten in six straight road affairs.
Carson-Newman will go for win number one again tomorrow. It wasn't until game five of 2024 that C-N got its first win. As a program, there have only been six occasions in which the Eagles are winless through the first three games of a season. Wednesday's match will be third of five non-conference games, all against teams from the Gulf South Conference.
Under head coach Stephen Lyons and all-time, Carson-Newman is 3-0 against West Alabama and has outscored the Tigers 6-1 in the three wins. All three wins have come in the past three seasons and all three have served as the first win of each of those seasons for C-N as well.
Wednesday's meeting will be C-N's first ever trip to UWA. Through three all-time meetings, these two clubs have played very physical matches. In three games, there were nearly as many combined fouls (86) as combined shots (88). Two of the three meetings have also seen at least one red card in the match as well. C-N has been shown 10 yellow cards and one red in three meetings, while UWA has 12 yellows and 3 reds in three meetings.
West Alabama went to Florida to begin its 2025 season. The Tigers opened the year in West Palm Beach against Palm Beach Atlantic, suffering a 4-1 loss in the season opener. UWA scored an equalizer in the 32nd minute to level the match at intermission but surrendered three goals in an eight-minute stretch in the second half. The competition got stiffer to close the first week, facing preseason #1 Lynn this past Sunday. A 60th minute goal had the Tigers ahead, but Lynn's Martijn Smith scored twice in the final 25 minutes to seal the comeback victory and hand UWA its two second straight loss to start the year.
Ross Nelson's team was picked to finish sixth in a strong Gulf South Conference. Defender Abdul Kamara and midfielder Ronny Wakelin were selected to the Preseason All-GSC team.
Chances have been slim for the Tigers through two games. They have attempted just five shots through two games, but luckily four of those have hit the target and two have found the back of the net. David Nunez has scored both goals on his only two shots of the season. Wakelin has assisted both goals. Nunez, the former GSC Freshman of the Year, has 11 career goals and eight career assists in 32 games.
UWA has not started a season winless through its first three games since 2022, and currently has a five-match unbeaten streak in home openers.
First touch is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. eastern time. A video stream is available with a subscription to FloSports at cneagles.com/floMSOC.
