JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Carson-Newman suffered its (1-6-2, 1-3 SAC) third loss in South Atlantic Conference play on Wednesday night, seeing Emory & Henry (3-3-2, 2-2-1) score the game's only goal in the 81st minute to seal the win.
"We just need to cut some of the little errors out," Carson-Newman head coach Stephen Lyons said. "I'm asking so much out of the core group, the minutes they are putting on their legs. We didn't take as many risks after they scored, and I think they legs were getting a little heavy. Our decision-making needs to be a little quicker and better. As far as effort goes, the guys left it all on the line. It was a pretty even game and one goal was always probably going to win it and it did."
The loss for C-N keeps it winless at home this season and winless through three home games for the first time since 2002.
The one-goal loss is the fourth this season. The Eagles have now allowed one goal in six of their nine matches but are just 1-3-2 in those affairs.
It's the first time Carson-Newman has been shutout at home in conference play since playing to a scoreless draw with Lenoir-Rhyne on October 7th, 2023.
The two teams needed to settle into the match early on. E&H attempted just two shots in the first 20 minutes, while C-N attempted just one. Adrian Colon sent a shot toward the bottom right side that forced Eagles goalkeeper Elijah Buford (Atlanta, Ga.) to make his first save. Carson-Newman's shot came from Tim Haans (Tilburg, Netherlands), missing high in the 12th minute.
The rest of Carson-Newman's first half shots were blocked. Ben Dukes (Southampton, England) fired a pair of shots that were blocked less than a minute apart. Mitchell Honcoop and Antoine Torrent took the next few, but they were also blocked in the 25th minute.
Buford made two more saves, in the 28th minute and the 45th minute to keep the match scoreless at the break. Carson-Newman maintained more of the possession, 55 to 45 percent in the opening half.
Emory & Henry attempted the first two shots after halftime, but they were both blocked in the 51st and 59th minutes.
Three of Carson-Newman's four second-half shots came in a three-minute increment. Lucas Trull (Johnson City, Tenn.) and Honcoop had shots blocked in the 61st and 62nd minutes. Antoine Torrent's (Clermont ferrand, France) was the third and final shot of the sequence, seeing his saved by E&H goalkeeper Baptise Berthozat.
Only one Wasps shot in the second half was on target and it went in the back of the net. A turnover led to Jean Charles Eyidi setting up Noah Serwy in the center of the box to fire a shot into the bottom right corner, past Buford to make it 1-0 E&H in the 81st minute.
With nine minutes to play, C-N could only muster up one final shot. The shot was a header by Dan Coles and went right to Berthozat who made his second and final stop.
E&H edged C-N in shots 10-9 and 4-2 on goal. The Eagles had three corner kicks to the Wasps' two.
There were more fouls (21) than shots (19) in the match.
Three different Eagles attempted two shots in the match. 10 of the 11 starters played the entire match, with Thomas LaChapelle spelling Torrent a breather for six minutes late in the first half.
Carson-Newman is off for over a week, returning to action on Friday October 10th at Mars Hill.
