JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The Carson-Newman men's golf team wraps up its fall season on Monday and Tuesday at the 2023 Copperhead Championship at the Innisbrook Resort in North Palm Harbor, Florida.
The last time out, the Eagles finished in 7th at the Hurricane Invitational, highlighted by a top-5 finish from Luke Stock. Head coach Randy Wylie was impressed with Stock's consistency and effort throughout the event.
"He's a very consistent player," Wylie said. "He's a leader on our team and brings it every week. We need that kind of consistency throughout the whole team. He managed his game very well in tough conditions."
In addition to Stock's performance, Nick Daugherty climbed 12 spots on the final day, and Wylie believes that Daugherty has been on the cusp of a great performance all fall.
"Nick has been right on the cusp of having some great rounds," Wylie said. "He's mentally getting used to playing at this level and finishing his rounds. He did a better job of managing himself and playing one shot at a time… that is the biggest thing for him because he has a lot of talent."
Going into the Copperhead Championship, Wylie knows the Eagles must focus on eliminating big numbers.
"We know we need to do a better job at not making as many doubles," Wylie said. "We're going to play a course that is really challenging, so we've really got to do a better job being smarter and avoiding those big numbers."
After his impressive top-5 finish, Luke Stock believes the Eagles are getting closer to competing at the highest level.
"We're definitely getting closer," Stock said. "I'm hoping we can peak in the big tournament coming up this week."
Facing an incredibly tough schedule, Stock appreciates the challenge and knows that the competition will only get tougher this week.
"All of the events have had pretty good fields," Stock said. "I think the tournament coming up is meant to be our strongest field, but it's the same thing for us every week, just trying to execute our gameplan."
The course at the Innisbrook Resort is featured on the PGA Tour, and Stock is excited to compete at a highly touted course.
"It'll be pretty cool," Stock said. "The guys are pretty excited to play at a PGA Tour, and hopefully, it'll be in tip-top condition."
The Eagles will take the course at Innisbrook Resort at 9 am on Monday to kick off the first round of action.
