JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – A day after being named SAC Defensive Player of the Week, Carson-Newman senior linebacker Cruz Temple has been tabbed as the Tennessee Sportswriters Association Defensive Player of the Week, the organization announced Tuesday.
Temple joins Zane Whitson as Eagles to be honored with weekly laurels from the league this season. He is the first player on either side of the ball to earn an honor from the TSWA. An Eagle hasn't been named state player of the week since Major Williams was recognized following teh Eagles win in the regular season over Wingate on Sept. 23.
The Abbeville, S.C.-native tallied nine tackles, a tackle for loss and three quarterback hurries in Carson-Newman's 28-6 win at Anderson Saturday.
C-N limited AU to 270 yards of offense in the game. While Temple did not register a sack, he was part of an overwhelming presence in the backfield that did sack AU QB Tyler Wesley four times and pressured him with 15 quarterback hurries.
The 15 QB hurries are the most by C-N defensively in the last 14 years. AU was 3-for-10 on third downs and 0-for-3 on third downs in the contest.
Temple has started all six games for C-N at linebacker. The Eagles have the SAC's top scoring defense.
Temple and the rest of the Eagles will be in action Saturday at 3 p.m. on the banks of Mossy Creek for Homecoming against UVA Wise.
