SALISBURY, N.C. — The Carson-Newman women's tennis team (5-3) improved their conference record to 3-1 after taking down South Atlantic Conference foe Catawba (8-8, 0-5 SAC) 5-4 after a back-and-forth match.
"What a gutsy win for the women," coach Jean Love said. "We started well winning two of the doubles, then we had to battle back in singles."
Carson-Newman again relied on strong doubles play as it took an early advantage winning two of the three sets. Mallory Jackson (Erwin, Tenn.) teamed up with partner Jill Corsato-Owsianka (Germany) to win the No. 1 match in extra time 9-7. Patricia Guerreiro (Portugal) and Jennifer Ott (Knoxville, Tenn.) also continued their strong play, winning at No. 3 8-4. This extends their undefeated streak to seven straight in duels for this season.
The Eagles then split with Catawba in singles play, wining three of six. Corsato-Owsianka picked up the victory at No. 2, winning 7-5, 1-6, 6-4. Guerreiro immediately followed suit at No. 3 in impressive fashion. She came out on top with a score of 6-0, 6-2. Sydney Ledington (Corbin, Ky.) wrapped up the scoring for the Eagles on the day as she was a winner at No. 4, 6-1, 4-6, 6-2.
"Jill and Sydney just kept us in the match," Love said. "Then Patricia came through with the singles victory to seal the deal. This win was a much-needed boost for us. We competed better today and just refused to go away when Catawba put together some quick singles wins to take the lead."
The Eagles travel to face the Wingate Bulldogs in a match-up of two of the SAC 's top-three teams. Carson-Newman is placed in third, while the Bulldogs lead the league. A 3 p.m. start time has been scheduled for the match.
