JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The Carson-Newman women's tennis team failed to reach three straight match wins as they fell to the Trojans of Anderson University 7-2 Monday afternoon at the Carson-Newman Tennis Complex.
This marks the first conference loss for the Lady Eagles.
"Too many unforced errors in doubles set a bad tone for the match and we just could not overcome the momentum that Anderson gained after doubles," coach Jean Love said.
Carson-Newman fell behind early as they lost two of three singles matches. Junior Patricia Guerreiro (Portugal) and senior Jennifer Ott (Knoxville, Tenn) were able to overcome the early deficit and secured the No. 3 doubles match 8-3. The duo has continued to be a bright spot for the Eagle club, as they continued their undefeated trek to 5-0 in duels.
Guerreiro also shined in singles, wining the No. 3 match, 6-0, 6-1. Other than that, the Eagles were held winless in singles, which proved to be the difference maker in the 7-2 defeat.
Though Carson-Newman still owns a winning record in South Atlantic Conference play, there are things this club must do better, according to coach Love. "We have got to get mentally tougher and cut down on unforced errors."
The Eagles will try it again as they head to North Greeneville University on Wednesday for a 2 p.m. match time.
