JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Carson-Newman (5-3, 2-1 SAC) returns to Holt Fieldhouse Saturday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. when it matches up with Anderson (4-3, 1-1 SAC).
"We've had great games with Anderson over the past few years," Carson-Newman head coach Mike Mincey said. "They are a good team that is well-coached. It will be nice to be back at home after this two game road stretch. Hopefully being at home will help us perform better and shoot the ball better to score more."
These two programs know each other quite well. They have met eight times of the past two seasons, playing twice in the regular season, and then once each season in the SAC and NCAA Tournaments as well. Over these past eight meetings, Carson-Newman has won five of them, with the losses coming being at Anderson the past two seasons and in the SAC Tournament this past season. The Lady Eagles won the most meaningful meeting, winning 78-75 in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament. Carson-Newman leads the all-time series 24-16 and has won 14 of the 20 meetings in Holt Fieldhouse.
Carson-Newman's defense was the key to a bounce-back win on Wednesday, limiting Tusculum to 28 percent shooting. C-N also held TU to 53 points, the fewest its allowed in game this year. It also scored 24 points off turnovers in the double-digit road win. The Lady Eagles defense has now held five of its first eight opponents below 40% shooting. Dating back to last season, C-N has now held an opponent to sub 30% shooting for the third time in the past nine games.
After scoring just 13 points in her previous two games, Jennifer Sullivan regained her shooting form by scoring an efficient 24 points on Wednesday. It's Sullivan's fourth 20-point game this season and the fourth time she has drilled three or more three-pointers in a game this season. She is third in the SAC with 22 three-pointers and her 17.4 points per game is fifth-best.
The Lady Eagles are back at home where they are 2-0 this season and have won nine straight dating back to last season. The nine-game home winning streak is the 11th longest active home winning streak in DII and the second longest among Southeast Region teams.
Anderson visits Mossy Creek with all sorts of momentum, having won back-to-back games over Mars Hill and Young Harris. On Wednesday afternoon at Young Harris, AU went on a 20-0 scoring run in the final five minutes to win by double-digits. They trailed by nine with five minutes left in that game. The Trojans are 4-3 and have split their two conference games, with the loss being on the road to Emory & Henry. Five of their final seven games have been on the road, going 2-3.
After graduating two All-Region players from last season, the Trojans have relied on newcomer Ciara Harris to be the team's top scorer. The Johnson C. Smith transfer averages 16.3 points per game but has just 14 points in her past two games. Harris has two 20+ point games this year and shoots 40% from the field. Peytyn Oliver and Ashlyn Sheridan both score in double-figures by average and are the top three-point shooters for AU. Sheridan's scoring has been on efficient 46% shooting from the field and from long distance.
For the second straight game, C-N will face one of the best defensive teams against the three-point shot. AU's defense has held its first seven opponents to 25% shooting from beyond the arc, with no team having made double-digit threes against them this season.
Tipoff from Holt Fieldhouse with the Trojans is set for 2:00 p.m. Coverage on the Eagle Sports Network begins at 1:45 with the AEC Countdown to Tipoff on Mix 105.5 (WSEV-FM, Sevierville) and online at cneagles.com/live.
