Men’s tennis downed by Cobras 4-1 on the road
The Eagles drop a conference meeting with Coker for a 1-3 start to SAC play.
HARTSVILLE, S.C. – The Eagles drop a conference meeting with Coker for a 1-3 start to SAC play.
With the loss, C-N is 3-9 on the year, and has lost the last two straight.
It was all the more frustrating for C-N, considering the Eagles took care of the doubles point.
"Disappointed that we couldn't capitalize on the doubles point. We did out best doubles today and couldn't get it done in singles," said head coach Nate Gangelhoff.
The second and third doubles teams got it done for the Eagles in the conference match. Yassin Ali and Leonard Baecker pushed their doubles record to 3-2 with a 6-4 win. Wade Donovan and Darko Kolevski leveled their record as a pair to 1-1 with a 6-4 win as well.
Louis Keenan and Max Stollecker fell 6-3 at first doubles. They own a 5-6 record at the ones.
The momentum unfortunately did not carry over to singles. Louis Keenan moved to 3-6 on the year at first singles with a 6-2, 6-2 loss. Leonard Baecker fell by that same score at third singles.
Yassin Ali is now 1-5 in solo play after a 6-4, 6-4 loss at fourth singles, while Wade Donovan at the six line dropped his match by a score of 6-1, 6-3.
Max Stollecker's match went unfinished at second singles. The sophomore had battled back from a 6-2 loss in set one to grab set two 7-6 (7-3). He was up 2-1 in set three when the Cobras took the match.
Darko Kolevski was also close to finishing his match and put another point on the board for C-N. The sophomore grabbed set one 6-4 and was winning 5-4 in the second when the match ended.
The loss levels the all-time series with Coker at 6-6 and snaps a five match winning streak the Eagles had put together over the last few seasons.
"We still lack the mental maturity and strength that's needed to push past adversity. We need our guys to grow better and faster. Hoping to change things around next week," said Gangelhoff.
That opportunity presents itself on Tuesday when the Eagles travel to Emory, Virginia, to take on Emory & Henry. First serve is scheduled for 12:00 PM against the Wasps. For updates, follow @cneagles on social media. Full coverage will be available at cneagles.com.
