Tennis falls in regional match to Middle Georgia State
C-N hosted the Knights for their first match at the Carson-Newman University Tennis Courts, but dropped the match 0-4.
JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – C-N hosted the Knights for their first match at the Carson-Newman University Tennis Courts, but dropped the match 0-4.
"It was a difficult day overall. We had to make some adjustments and we did our best to compete," said head coach Nate Gangelhoff. "For the first match outdoors and against a very good team, we did what we could."
Early on, the men struggled to find a rhythm. Middle Georgia State swiftly took the doubles point after the Eagles' pairs combined for just three total games against the Knights. At first doubles, Louis Keenan and Max Stollecker's match went unfinished, but the two were down 1-5; the twos Wade Donovan and Giancarlo Rosario fell 2-6, and the threes Boris Jordanov and Aiden Standefer lost 0-6.
At first singles, Louis Keenan battled with Alejandro Vizoso and grabbed a 7-5 victory in set one. The second set was tied at 3 when their match was cut short.
Max Stollecker remains undefeated in singles. Playing #2 today, the Creighton transfer fought in set one but fell 4-6 and was tied 4-4 in the second set when the Knights clinched the match.
At fourth singles Wade Donovan nearly mounted a comeback against his opponent. After falling 2-6 in set one, the freshman dropped the second frame 5-7.
Aiden Standefer was still working on court six when MGA clinched the match. Standefer had dropped set one 3-6 and was down 3-5 in the second before the bout ended.
Boris Jordanov fell at fifth singles in straight sets and Giancarlo Rosario lost 3-6, 1-6.
"I'm proud of a few certain guys who fought and keep improving day by day, I know that we will eventually put everything all together," said Gangelhoff.
With this loss, the Eagles are 1-4 on the year and drop the first all-time contest between C-N and MGA. Carson-Newman will have four days to tighten things up before they host #15 Lee on campus for a midweek match. The match with Lee is currently scheduled for 2:00 PM.
