JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The Carson-Newman (1-1) men's soccer team heads into its first conference match at Wingate (2-1) tomorrow.
"We are looking forward to this weekend," Carson-Newman head soccer coach Richard Moodie said. "It's out first conference game and we have to start it off on the right foot."
The men are coming off a hard 2-0 loss at no. 17 Saint Leo last Saturday. C-N was outshot 20 to 10 and 10 to two in shots on goal.
Wingate defeated UNC Pembroke 2-0 last Wednesday. Rodrigo Ulgalde put in the Bulldog's first goal in the 55th minute assisted by Charlie Machell. Machell got a goal of his own in 66th, his fourth of the year, off a pass from Gui Peron inside the box.
"We need to realize the importance of this match," Coach Moodie said, "and make sure we don't slip up like last year."
The Bulldogs defeated the Eagles 2-1 last season in C-N's home opener. Nick Skoda (Knoxville, Tenn.) put C-N up 1-0 in the sixth minute off a pass from Lucas Siqueira (Sao Paulo, Brazil).
With one minute remaining in regular time, Siqueira went down with an injury during Wingate's possession. Wingate received a free kick to resume play off which Peron Da Silva scored.
With four minutes remaining in the second overtime, the lights on the field went out. The Bulldogs received another free kick to resume action resulting in another goal and the win. Alex Nelson claimed the point.
C-N has not defeated Wingate since 2011 when Matt Craine (Tenn.) and Robbie Hill (England), both since graduated, contributed a goal each for a 2-0 victory.
"We are going into this game very humbly," Coach Moodie said, "and hopefully we will bring home the win."
Tomorrow's match kicks off at 7:30 p.m. Action can be followed live at http://www.sidearmstats.com/wingate/msoc/.
